We are going to start solids this weekend and our pedi was pretty in favor of rice cereal or oatmeal as a first food for the iron. I initially wanted to do a veggie as LO's first food. Just curious what others chose to do!

@hilsy85: Sorry I hate rice cereal...empty calories, man. At least he should have suggested organic, brown rice cereal?
My ped said this too and I was like.."but, Id rather do veggies" and he was like "Well, that is even better!"
We gave peas today:) Not a very fun first, but I wanted to try him on veggies before fruit because I don't want all the sugar and I don't want him to get used to sweet stuff and then reject veggies. I plan on making my own but I found Earth's Best organic jars on sale the other day so I stocked up and I won't need to make my own purees for awhile.

Butternut squash. Then banana. Then pears. We didn't do any cereals until much later in the first month of solids.

A slice of raw apple (skin on), stewed apple, lightly steamed broccoli, mashed banana - not all at once of course!
We're doing a mixture of BLW and purées.

Apples and carrots purée!
My pedi also said rice cereal initially but because of his reflux he'd been having rice cereal in his bottle. We were ready for something else. He loved it

We did rice then oat and he didn't really get into it. Then pears, squash, apples, peas, sweet potato...

We did avocado first. DS loved it! I think we did sweet potatoes after that.

@TurtleDoves: you inspired me to give Miss A puréed peas for her afternoon snack today!

@TurtleDoves: yeah...to be fair, she did say "multi grain cereal"...so fun that you started solids!
@Rubies: how did you use the cereals later? Did you just start making mixes with them?
@T-Mom: @Mrs.B: @Sweet T: avocado was initially the first food I wanted to do with LO!

@hilsy85: I just introduced brown rice cereal and barley cereal (mixed with water) as a new food after she had tried different flavours of things. She ate it plain.

Roasted butternut squash. I chose something that was local and in season at the time.
Ditto to @TurtleDoves: . I think rice cereal is empty calories and not sure why docs keep recommending it except for the mushy texture? If you want to stick wiht a "rice" cereal consider making your own. Take brown rice and grind it in a food processor or coffee grinder. 1/4 cup ground rice powder to 1 cup liquid (you can use formula or breastmilk or just plain water). When M got older I also used homemade chicken stock as well and added in mashed yams etc for more flavor and nutrition.
@hilsy when I did give rice it was always more in a porridge form. Always with something else added in, some kind of vegetable puree or like I said as a porridge/congee.

Avocado and she loved it. We started with veggies/fruit, skipped the cereal.

Steak!!!! I chose meat for the iron. She LOVED IT!
We didn't do baby cereals bc of soy & wheat contamination.

@regberadaisy: They used to recommend it because they thought it was the most unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, and now they do it out of habit and tradition. Science has already proven that it isn't the best option nutritionally - but a lot of doctors aren't really up to date with this stuff, unfortunately.
For the OP - here's a great article about first foods and why cereal may not be the best choice: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/20/get-the-white-out-of-babys-first-foods.aspx

I found this article interesting. I've been doing some research. I think we'll start with bananas or sweet potatoes.

I can't believe our babies are at the point of eating solid foods already!

Sweet potatoes! Our pediatrician advised against starting with rice cereal because of the recent arsenic news and that really freaked me out, and I didn't think LO would like oatmeal.

Sweet potatoes, I think. We introduced foods pretty quickly and did combos pretty quickly. It's hard to remember!

@runsyellowlites: We'd debated starting E with steak but he grabbed a piece of roasted butternut squash off of my plate during dinner, so we just went with it.
Our pedi green-lighted rice cereal at 4.5 months, we chose to wait until 6 months and start with vegetables. Well, he chose it, but there's a decent chance we would have offered him a vegetable to start with (or steak, or avocado, or a soft-boiled egg).

@runsyellowlites: interesting! did your LO just gum the steak? How big of a piece was it? Would love it if DS could try steak with us too he'll be starting solids/purees in 2 weeks!

Avocado was my son's first food although we started organic brown rice cereal the next day. (Breakfast: cereal, lunch: veggie, dinner: veggie)

Rice cereal immediately constipated our LO, so we switched to Earth's Best oatmeal. I really love the Earth's Best oatmeal, and our LO handled it much better than the rice cereal. As far as purees go, we started with pears, then applesauce.
persimmon / 1194 posts
Rice cereal (she hated it), oatmeal (hated it), sweet potato (loved it!)
apricot / 468 posts
Rice cereal, then oatmeal (both of which LO never really cared for). After that, we offered sweet potatoes, which he absolutely loved!
squash / 13764 posts
Thanks for all your responses! We ended up doing sweet potato (LO was kind of meh about them) and then oatmeal which he really liked! I'm excited to try avocado and green beans next
