Didn't know where to put this.
Came across and man & woman dumpster diving for cans today. I mean he was in the dumpster sorting through everything & she was outside grabbing the cans he was collecting. Oh btw she looked about 6 months pregnant. This is not something I come across much at all. Normally I would call the place & let them know but when I saw her belly I just let them to their thing.
What would you have done?
Eta: I would call if they were diving for papers not cans.

Nothing - it's not illegal, is it? I basically expect someone to take the cans out of my recycling. When we lived in a bigger city there was a man on a bike who always did it, and then when we moved to the suburbs there's a couple in a car who do it.

This happened to me when I was living in an apt complex, I was taking out the trash at night and there was a guy sitting inside the trash bins sorting/throwing out cans and bottles. It scared the CRAP out of me and I ran up to my apt.
A few weeks after that, I got a notice from our management company asking us to report these situations because technically they're stealing resources from the city.
Either way, if they're not hurting anyone (apparently I don't care about the city's resources), I would ignore it.

When I lived in the south, this happened all the time. I was really freaked at first, so I called 911 to ask about it. They said that it happens all of the time, and unless they were causing a scene, there wasn't much they could do. Happens where we just moved, too. Now we just bag the cans separately in the recycling so that if someone wants them, they can just take them off of the top.

@Sugar.Biscuit: I would probably go buy them a sandwich from a near by store/deli & ask if they needed help finding resources for whatever situation they may be in. Figure that's one less meal they'd have to worry about getting for themselves & I'd rather offend on the side of helping than not & wonder.
(My mom started a ministry home for women so I've become accustomed to getting involved in people's less than ideal situations)

We live in a complex with a shared dumpster, and I notice the same woman, once a week, coming in to collect cans. Sometimes, she'll park in my DH's parking spot once he's already left for work, but I still don't say anything. Part of me wonders about her financial situation, since she owns a pretty nice truck.

I'd give them a thumbs up - obviously they're hard up but are working hard to make ends meet. Especially if its from the trash so then they're recycled instead of pitched!

I would let them be. They aren't hurting anything and I'm sure it isn't their first choice to be there.

I wouldn't have said anything (though would have been compelled to buy them lunch or something). Situations like that break my heart.

I wouldn't have done anything. Maybe I would leave my cans/bottles in a cardboard box nearby for them the next week.
I had lots of friends who used to dumpster dive outside grocery stores and drug stores for boxed and canned food and other items when we were in college. just poor college students!

I wouldn't have done anything, except maybe let them know to come by on a certain day and I'd give them my own recycleables.
Why on earth would I report them - they aren't hurting anyone and clearly they are struggling and just working to get by.
