I've found the key is accessories. They can really improve your outfit and add some variety in your wardrobe. Plus you don't have to spend a lot and it doesn't matter what size you are either!!

I really should clear out my wardrobe after reading this.
I can't live without -
Dark skinny/straight leg jeans for everyday, and one pair boot/baby flare for heels.
Good quality merino cardigans - black/grey/charcoal/cream
Black/White/Grey/Striped t-shirts in both long sleeve and short sleeve. (sometimes I'll be adventurous and go for red)
A few jackets - denim, black pea coat, puffer coat/vest and a black/beige trench.
A good fitting black full skirt, and a pencil skirt.
A few satiny shell tops for fancier occasions (hardly ever)
Dresses - I don't wear them much, but a simple black sleeveless dress (I prefer A-line).
For shoes I always have a pair of white converse sneakers, black ballet flats, black knee high riding boots (Frye Paige) and short chelsea boots (Frye Carson), simple black pumps, and for sunny nice days - Swedish Hasbeens clogs

I am not trendy, I also don't own a single pair of leggings or a white button down shirt, which seems to be on every magazine's list!
A good coat, possibly 2, that you can put on over whatever you are wearing and look instantly polished. I think this is where a lot of women think they can get away without, not realizing that you can get really great coats at the end of season sales. I never wear black, my collection of coats is hunter green, heathered teal, small houndstooth and ivory. I also have a short khaki trench, but I am planning to switch that out to a black trench next season.
Dark jeans and white jeans in whatever cut works for your body, I look best in trouser style jeans, but I also have one pair of skinnies in both dark and white.
A blazer of any color or cut, instantly dresses up a tee and jeans.
One of my go to outfits is:
long sleeved gray round neck tee under a chambray button up shirt. Over that, a slim vest (not to puffy). Then, on the bottom, either a brown corduroy pencil skirt or a camel wool pencil skirt. Leather boots or Hunters, depending on where I am going.
I also think every woman needs suiting separates, they don't have to be expensive, but a coordinating blazer, skirt, pants or dress are handy to have. They can be used if you have to go to a funeral, dinner with your husband's boss, etc. I like Jones New York for this. I just got a jacket and pants for $60. I'll wear them for years.
