I'm considering making some clothing for a local mom's market. Trying to decide if what I need to charge to cover time and materials is reasonable.
What would you spend on say a pair of leggings or a hoodie? What about for your kids?
Eta I also use my leggings to work out in. Not sure if that makes a difference

It depends on what you mean by custom. Is it fit to measurements where people get to pick the fabric and size? Or pick from stuff you made?
Honestly, I wouldn't spend much on those things, but would spend considerably more on sundresses

@MamaBear87: so for me, if they were good quality and fit me, about $30. But I wouldn't buy without trying on, and I couldn't at a market. I wouldn't buy a hoodie.
For kids, like $10. I don't value homemade clothes. I generally find they don't fit as well as commercially made items.
For simple, classic sundresses, I'd pay $30 for a kid's dress if it is well made and in washable fabric. I wouldn't buy one for me because there's such a low chance of it fitting right

Here we have a locally made kids’ boutique. Grow with me pants for kids are $25 usually. Other kids’ clothing runs anywhere from $27-45 depending on what it is. I know someone who makes clothing and doesn’t make adult leggings because they would be too expensive for fabric and time and likely no one would buy them upwards of $60 for custom sized.
Like someone said above, I couldn’t buy clothes without trying them on. I wouldn’t buy a hoodie, but that’s personal preference. I’d much rather have a cardigan type sweater that’s open.

Do you ladies buy inexpensive ready to wear clothing as well?
I live in a area where expensive ready to wear leggings are worn often so I guess perhaps it depends on region

If I found someone in my area selling well made hoodies, women's dresses, or maybe even pants I would definitely rather buy them directly from the seamstress than going to a department store. Nothing in stores fits the way I want. I would pay $40-60 for these. But it would be a big investment so I would only buy a few pieces and then be done for years. I can't afford handmade clothes for my kids when they grow out of them or ruin them quickly.

@MamaBear87: I wear a combination. Right now I have on $190 shoes, $150 jeans, a $5 tank top, and a $30 sweater. I wore $50 running pants, a $65 running bra, $20 sweatshirt, and $3 tank on my run this morning. Everything I have on is at least a year old. Material, fit, and how much use I get out of a garment are my driving factors.
When you say custom leggings, I'm thinking bright and colorful. A trendy, statement piece. I wouldn't get much use out of it because it would be so memorable. So I'd pay less. I'd pay a lot more for thick, black leggings that fit well.
I know my neighborhood (fairly well off, median income around $200k) wouldn't hesitate to spend $70 on leggings from Nordstrom, but passed on the cheaper statement leggings from Lularoe because the value wasn't there. But, we re more likely to buy target leggings than Nordstrom because the difference in quality isn't worth the difference in price

Leggings? Depends on the quality... I would more readily go custom for pants or jeans which I always have a hard time with fit, leggings stretch so I don't see them needing to be custom-built, if that makes sense... If they were a certain fabric or whatever then maybe... but there are SO MANY options out there for leggings, I'd just go buy them. I typically buy Athleta or Lulu for working out, and just cheap old navy cotton ones for lounging... so my price range for leggings is $10-$125.
Hoodies, again, not fitted, so not sure why custom, unless specific fabric, or a cool design - so for adults, maybe $55, and kids, $35-40?
Must caveat that I have never purchased custom clothing, so I may be way off.

So I might spend much more for custom clothes which were tailor made for me. But I’m almost certainly going to skip on homemade clothes at a market. I can usually find something mass produced of higher quality for the prices offered. I would expect leggings to start at $50-70 so I would probably elect to just get Under Armor.
For the kids, I would never seek out homemade clothes (unless they were made by a friend or family) but if I found something just way too cute and I had to have it, I would expect it to be pretty expensive.
