We are invited to a barbecue tomorrow to celebrate our friends' engagement. What would you think the dress for such an event would be? I *think* it will mostly be outdoors.

Probably a sundress. BBQ seems pretty casual to me, but then there's the added engagement party factor.

I would wear a sundress - I had similar thoughts as @Mrs. Oatmeal.
ETA two other thoughts:
1) I would rather be overdressed than underdressed. My sister had a BBQ engagement party and clothes really varied.
2) Don't forget the best accessory in the South... BUG SPRAY. -

edit: it would also depend on how fancy the coupe is, if they are super laid back you could get away with nice shorts and a dressier top with wedges as well. I like sandals for BBQs though...

Sundress, maxi dress, or maxi skirt and top.

@looch: lightweight (cotton, linen), usually knee length and sleeveless, usually is floral but doesn't have to be.

Yes to sundress and sandals! Or skirt and blouse and sandals. Or even dressy capris if you wear those
