My boys haven't shown a strong interest in any type of thing yet, like cars, certain animals, etc., and I'm curious what other toddlers first major interests/obsessions were. They do like playing with balls, so I could see that developing into a major interest and maybe dogs. They're obsessed with our dog, but don't show a ton of interest in dogs in general.
What were your toddler's first major interests?

Oh my gosh. Any vehicle. He LOVES them. That was definitely the first major interest and it's still going strong at almost 2. He's also OBSESSED with lawnmowers...so odd lol.

Right now it's blocks/legos and dolls ("babies!"). We've also bad balls/balloons, and tools. She is also OBSESSED with musicals, animated or not.

My son was (and still is) obsessed with books/alphabet/reading. He'd rather have me buy him a book than a toy. My 2 year old daughter is obsessed with ballerinas. Like O B S E S S E D.

@Running Elley: Haha, i think it's kind of appropriate since her mama has a degree in Theatre (well, almost). She has a soft spot for Judy Garland.

He's only 14 months so no super distinct obsessions yet, but he loves dogs (and all critters), and he definitely is beginning to notice cars going by now, and always points to them. He could definitely go through certain books over and over and over. He doesn't talk, but loves pointing at certain things (like dogs!) and having us say what they are, make sounds, etc. He also loves dancing, he'll do so at the merest hint of music! Another thing that always gets his attention is food-the real thing, pictures of it, singing about it...he smacks his lips to mean food and yum yum.
Oh and...Elmo

DS loves dogs, ducks and cars. He loves to point them out and wave to them when he sees them.

J's always been a super physical kid and loves playing all sports, he could do it all day. He loves hockey and golf best but loves baseball and soccer too!

Dogs and balls around 11m, trucks and tractors around 15m. Now obsessed with counting and colors at 20m. Always obsessed with books since he was tiny-I can't sit down unless I want to be asked to "ree boo pwease"

Dogs were and still are his #1 interest. Balls/cars came next. Right now he's into his matchbox cars, building legos, and books. Dogs/babies are his fave! (20 months)

Cars, trucks, Elmo, chalk/crayons, ball, tablet games (unfortunately), books , fish, our cat and so much more. He tends to go through phases with different things. Maybe the twins have each other and that's enough fun for them right no

Ducks!! She started saying duck around 11 months and quickly became obsessed. She still really likes them, but she has more interests now, so the duck thing isn't quite an obsession anymore. Her main interests now are animals, flowers/leaves, and bags.

Fire trucks around 10 months, and the construction vehicles around 13/14 months. He is still obsessed with both of those categories at 21 months., and also loves books of all kinds

My 2 yr old daughter is on the nerdy side since she's currently into: Identifying letters from the alphabet, numbers, colors, and counting objects. Playing with puzzles, blocks, and balls.

Animals. She loves looking at pictures of animals and many of her first words were animal names and noises.

Balls were the first for both. And Water- looking at it, playing in it at every opportunity. Then dogs, and cars/trains.

Books, our cat, doggies in general balls briefly and now at 15 months the newest one is "colors" aka crayons. He doesn't actually color, he just likes to carry a bag of crayons around the apartment

Is outside an interest? He stands at the door all the time and says "outside? Outside?" He loves to do any/all outdoors stuff!
