I think the cute ones are necessary to get people in, but they need to have competent ones in order to keep the business going.

I'd be okay with a cute but dumb bartender, but when I need coffee, I need it fast and I need it right! I have zero tolerance for tomfoolery when it comes to my coffee.

I agree with @babyboecksmom. If they get my order wrong I'm not coming back.

Competent. Pretty but dumb does not work for me, LOL. But I am not a guy :). However, cute but dumb guys don't get a free pass from me, either.

Competent. I don't care what they look like, as long as they're clean and professional, but I do care whether my coffee is right or not!

This question isn't as easy as it appears, because most people have subconcious biases that they aren't aware of. Even women.

I waited tables at various restaurants all through college, and we had a rule of having to wear our hair up/back if it was longer than chin lenth, and I'm one of those girls that looks pretty manly with pulled back hair. One days where I wore more makeup to compensate, I got better tips (while providing the same level of service) from both men and women. When I cut my hair to chin length and could finally wear it down, my tips went up even more. There have been studies showing that more attractive waiters get better tips, even when service is equal.

So when you ask me, would I prefer compentant OR cute but not competant, I would say "competant", but in reality, I might perceive an attractive person as being more competant than they really are.

Mr. Bee, this means that your attractive baristas must REALLY suck, if you aren't subciously forgiving their mediocre service for their looks. It must be really bad service! haha
