By the time my kiddos are full time in school, I would like to be starting a new career in the family development/parent education field. This means working for non-profits most likely, so not very high on the income side.

Most of the employees in these organizations tend to be social workers, which means that many of them also have masters degrees.

Since I am a few years out, I am trying to determine where my time and effort is better spent...volunteering for organizations to gain experience and network (and in turn, start doing what I am passionate about on a much more part time basis), or taking classes and earning a masters degree.

So my question is, how much is that piece of paper really worth, in your opinion? Would you spend your time going to classes, or spend it volunteering where you eventually want to work?

I should add, I already have a bachelors degree and am a certified teacher in my state.

Thanks everyone
