I know of the tradition from books etc. But I also did not grow up with a tooth fairy

i grew up with the tooth fairy, but really only one or two teeth got money. I don't remember it being a big deal, and I vaguely remember telling my mom not to forget that my tooth was under the pillow and once she even paid me the next day because she forgot. I don't think I'll be doing the tooth fairy either, but I guess it will depend how old the kids are when they lose their first tooth and how into it they are.

My mom had this thing about "lying" to us so we never did the tooth fairy or Santa or anything like that but when we lost a tooth she would hide a dollar somewhere in the house & we would go on a treasure hunt...fun times!

@Mrs. Sunshine: hahaha same with my mom... although, and we don't know how it happened - I still ended up believing the tooth fairy was real! Cause she would tell us these things weren't real - tooth fairy, santa, easter bunny etc... but would play along so we still had the fun of it... and somehow I actually did end up believing until I was 9. The tooth fairy would leave me notes that she wouldn't pay me for my teeth unless I brushed them every day

@Mrs. Sunshine: she told me she was devastated and had serious trust issues with her mom when she found out santa wasn't real and didn't want that for us - but we didn't miss out on the fun and "magic" of it all maybe that's why we never felt compelled to tell friends that we knew - it was fun being in on it and pretending right along too! We'll probably do that with J then too.

@MrsMcD: we have the same worry regarding LO and pets. I never grew up with pets and I'm afraid of both cats and dogs. I don't want LO to be afraid of them either but we definitely aren't a pet family.

@sunny: Oh no!! I'm so sorry you are afraid of dogs! (I'm sorry I totally implied that you were a weird kid!) Do you have family members or friends that have dogs? I'm hoping that will be sufficient to acclimate a child.

@Mrs. Pen: oh my gosh, my mom too! She believed in Santa until she was 12 & even got in arguments with other kids at school about it.

I believed in the tooth fairy as a kid. I had a special little pillow with a pocket to hold the tooth. I think she brought a quarter for regular teeth, a dollar for molars.

When I was old enough to know the tooth fairy, etc. wasn't really, I invented "The Goodness Fairy" for my younger sister. Basically, I manipulated the heck out of her in order to try to get her to be less bratty/annoying. At first, the fairy would come almost every night provided she'd been nice to me or minded my parents. She'd leave trinkets under my sister's pillow...but then I ran out of stuff to give her and had to invent stories about how the stars had to be aligned just right for the Goodness Fairy to come down and pay a visit. My sister actually LOVED it and has fond memories of the Goodness Fairy. She wasn't upset when she found out it wasn't real... probably because she had obtained so much of my stuff that way!

@locavore_mama: the tooth fairy only comes after the tooth is out! You put your tooth under your pillow and sometime in the night, the tooth fairy replaces it with something fun!

@locavore_mama: ha ha if your child went to school with mine you wouldn't have to worry about the tooth fairy. The tooth fairy became expensive in the '90s- only money that folded would do. I did not benefit from the increase just my Lil bro. My husband didn't have the tooth fairy, so we may not either for our kids.

@mrbee: I agree! Something to get excited about for the pain.

Also I think it was a way for our mom to throw away or get rid of our teeth once they had fallen out without us getting upset about it!
