I know it will vary by region, but i just want to have an idea of what people pay. I was hoping not to pay more than $10/hour, but it's looking I am going to be paying up to be $15! yikes, is that normal? should i be looking elsewhere? like craiglist? how do you find a babysitter? I am using a website where people post their resumes and job postings for different nanny and babysitting jobs.

I use care.com and pay $10/hr for a babysitter (my husband is home at the time (but resting, not really hanging out with baby), so I guess they are sort of like helpers). I usually tip them if I am home even 5 min late, if J has been cranky, or if I've called them last minute. One of my sitters is a 27 y.o. married school teacher (with prior experience at a daycare center infant room) and the other is 19 y.o., works part time at a daycare center and is a mom (she doesn't bring her son). Rates in my area seem to range from $10-12, though some do charge $15.

I think in most areas $10 an hour for a sitter or mothers helper will probably work. The amounts people list on those sites are usually "best case scenario." I have used them as a nanny and I also found that they often make you select ranges of pay and I recall them being at awkward intervals. I would contact anyone who looks like a good fit regardless of what price they selected and just be up front about your budget.

@Cole: That's what I did. I listed $10-15 in my ad, because they only gave me the choice of 5, 10, 15, or 20. When I replied to applicants, I said that I was looking to pay $10/hr and asked what they required. Most were willing to do it for that amount, but a few said they required 12 or 15.
I babysat/nannied part-time up until 2-3 years ago. I charged $10 for one child and $12 for 2 or more. I have a graduate degree, have worked as a pediatric behavior therapist, and have 15+ years of experience... so I feel like is $10 was fair for me, it's fair for the folks I'm hiring.
ETA: When I joined care.com, I subscribed for $34 bucks a month (or something like that) so that I could do unlimited background checks. I meant to cancel after 1 month, but ended up keeping it for 2 or 3 months. When I cancelled, they gave me the option of a year membership for $70, which I ended up buying (because I want to use it for pet sitters and other things). I wish I'd done one month, then cancelled right away and taken their special offer, so it would have cost me $100 for the year. Still a lot, but I want to make sure I get a lot of good people in place.

I'm in Seattle and have twins. I pay $16/hr for the first 4 hours then $13 each additional hour. At the moment I have the same gal 3 days a week for 5.5 hours a day.

We're in the Seattle area and pay $15/hr, but she is only here 3-4 hours/week. I'm a firm believer in overpaying awesome childcare professionals.

I pay her $15 or $20 per hour depending on my mood. She was a referral from my house cleaner.

@78h2o: do u mind me asking where you live? or if you are in a big city versus not? i live in a major city in Canada, so i wonder if i should expect $15 as the norm. i guess i have to have to suck it up and pay it. i know i don't want to hire a teenager, so if i want better quality, it seems i will have to pay that much.
i offered one person $10 and she wrote back asking for $15! i will check out care.com today and see what other options i have. thanks for all the feedback!

@PurpleUnicorn: I live in the suburbs of Baltimore, which I consider a major city. Most moms I know here pay $10, so I dont think I'm alone in paying $10. As I said, I will randomly tip though. If they just come over for 2 hrs and she's cranky, I'll often pay $25, which is $12.50/ht, but I don't pay that every time
