I'm going to a fancy schmancy wedding soon and I need a new dress. Sadly, nothing from prebaby fits me yet. I'm hoping to find something at Ross because I really don't want to spend tons of money on a dress I won't wear that often. I hate spending money on clothes in general.

Same as Mrs. Bee plus Madewell, Reiss, H&M, Bloomies, and Lululemon. I buy a lot of stuff from Nordstrom.com as they have a good selection of different brands.

@artbee: have you tried JC Penney? They are really trying to rebrand their store and it looks like they have a lot of great dresses, reasonably priced, too. With LO now, I'd much rather shop for her than myself

@Mrs. Bee: I never online shop. I'm worried about sizing and I'm always too lazy to return things. Do you have any issues with that, or do you just make the returns?

H&M or F21 because I'm too cheap. I'm actually really starting to like Target stuff, check their Daily Deals every day.
Marshalls/TJ Maxx are also go to's.

Zara has GREAT stuff but $$$$. I love their stuff because they're made for my body type. Skinny and petite with tall sizes.
Didja know Zara has a kids line??? So adorable!! Way too rich for my blood though...

@regberadaisy: Zara kids is to die for but costs about as much as the adult line. The grownup stuff can be expensive, but a lot of it is surprisingly cheap if you know what to look for. Plus you can shop online now and shipping is free I think. Not sure. Either way, I find that price wise, there is not much difference between Zara Basic and a lot of H&M stuff.

@artbee: you should definitely check Zara out. I sound like a Zara sales rep haha. But they have some great things, sometimes no that expensive if you have patience. Plus they hold up waaaay better than H&M or Forever 21.

haha I only buy the $24.95 and under and sale items at H&M as well. I don't remember the last time I paid full retail for anything.
But I do have to agree the quality of Zara is far superior. But on the flip side I've never really had problem with my clothes from H&M or F21 holding up. I usually wear them for years before I donate them because I haven't worn it in a year or so.

P.S. My definition of "cheap" is VERY different from the masses! I don't remember the last time I paid more than $14 for a pair of jeans. I refuse to!

@artbee: I feel like Kohls get knocked SOO much for have poor quality cheap clothes. But I find soo many shirts there, but I ALWAYS pick the ones that are dry clean only....and wash them regularly....then they shrink! I need to start reading the tags!

I had no clue what a Zara was lol So I googled it and quickly exited the site, not my cup of tea since I'm a thousand sizes bigger than their models.
So, for me, I go to JC Penneys, Lane Bryant sometimes, Kohl's.
Maybe I'm just cheap lol

@MrsBrewer: Now that I think of it, my husband had a belt from there that fell apart after a week. He exchanged it and that belt fell apart too. He just kept it and duck taped it. I hate when I forget to read the tags and they're handwash or dry clean! I also just wear them and wash them normal until they're too small. Way too lazy for all of that!
@Crisark: You're right, that's another issue with shopping online. Of course it all looks great on the model, but I need to see it on someone that looks like me!

Honestly though if you're looking to get a dress for a fancy shmancy wedding I'm assuming long evening/cocktail dress? I would go Lord & Taylor or Macys. Department store. They're probably your best bet.
If you have Marshalls/TJ Maxx etc near you they have a dress department as well.

@artbee: Yep! I'm not the best at doing laundry, I can separate the colors, but if its new, do you expect me to read the tags....nope! they just go in a similar color load 
DH hates Kohls....they don't have a very good big and tall section, and that's what he needs....so he's a JC Penneys guy

For work I think the only store I ever shop at is banana. Sometimes jcrew when they're having a sale, but the clothes are so pricey it's just not worth it. I want to look professional, but don't want to spend a ton of money and I don't care if I I'm wearing the same shirt every other female in my office has on.
For weddings or going out clothes, I usually hit up the little boutiques in my neighborhood. If I go at the right time, there are racks of sale clothes and I can usually score designer clothing for reasonable prices. I always have success at The New York Look and there's a store called Teddy I go to for more low key jeans and tshirt type clothes. I'm not afraid of getting things altered, so recently for a wedding I bought a $350 dress on sale for $70 and paid about $50 for alterations. It fit me perfectly and I still think I got a good deal.

Really great quality stuff (IMO like Banana/Jcrew/Zara) but I can get things for under $19.99. Even better is when I find a coupon and stack that on top of the additional 25%! I've gotten work pants for $14, dresses for $10, cardigans for $15 during those sales!

So my favorites tend to be places that run lots of sales.
LOFT, Gap (esp the Outlet), American Eagle, The Buckle, H&M, ShopRuche, Maurices
I have stores I love that I can't afford as well: Boden, Anthropologie, Athleta, LuluLemon, JCrew - I get style inspiration from them and try to find similar pieces to create similar looks.

I got a great dress for my brother's wedding in May at JCrew. I stalked it until it went on sale, then waited for the 30% off on final sale items promo. Then the code didn't work, so I called in the order and got the shipping for free.
All in, $104 for a dress that originally retailed for $350. You have to know when to shop, not only where. It involves missing out on some items though, but I've got enough good deals that this method works for me. I also buy when I don't need stuff, but know I might need it in the future.
I also think Kohls gets a bad rap, but I get a lot of stuff from the Dana Buchmann and Vera Wang lines. The clothes have held up great, no complaints.

I tend to do most of my shopping at Banana Republic, Gap, and Nordstrom, but I'm cheap so I generally just stock up when they run sales, especially at the outlets, which I live very close to. I also love Urban, Anthropologie and Free People, but again, I usually only shop when there are sales.
I used to shop at Forever 21 and H&M, but after a while I noticed that those were always the first pieces to leave my closet either due to the fact that they just fell apart or because they're no longer in style after a short amount of time. I now restrict my shopping there because it's not really cheaper if I can only wear it for a year/season.

I like Loft, and the Loft outlet. And I always find great dresses at White House Black Market, whose outlet is awesome. I've recently had good luck at H&M, too, since the first two have been slightly out of budget lately.

@artbee: Macy's hands down. Also was our go to wedding registry. I really really love Macy's for all my shopping needs other than groceries!
Other stores I like to shop at are Loft outlet, J. Crew Outlet, and Gap outlet as go to stores.
