DS is almost 4 and he still can't spit. When do children normally figure out how to do this? I have no idea how to teach him how to do it. When we brush his teeth and I ask him to try he just makes spitting noises into the sink or blows a raspberry.

My friends nearly 4 1/2 year old can, because he got in trouble at school for spitting... My 3 year old does it sometimes, but other times he's acts like I'm trying to get him to do rocket science. 🤷‍♀️

We just taught my 3.5 year old by using a dry erase marker and drawing a monster in the sink and having him spit on it to ”scare it away”. It comes right off with spit/water

I don't know, but my 4.5 yr old still can't either. He does the same spit noise & thinks it's correct.

Can you have him start with spitting water (vs just spit?) That might be easier! I think my 5 year old can spit but my almost 3 year old cant. Is it weird that I don’t know this for sure? Haha

@Sams Mom: @AngelicOne: This makes me feel better. Can they blow their nose? That's another thing on my "why can't you do this yet" list. Although this think he can do, he just chooses not to...*sigh*
@peaches1038: @bees_knees: Good ideas!

@LadyDi: he "blows" his nose... Aka wastes Kleenex. I still have to use the nose Frieda on him, which is getting progressively harder side he's now 42" & 40 lbs 🤦‍♀️

I'm no help... I feel like DD1 watched some teeth brushing videos that involved spitting and just started doing it, maybe by 3? We've just used fluoride toothpaste for her forever. Then DD2 can actually spit at 2.5 b/c she copies her sister.

@LadyDi: My oldest got in trouble for spitting in preschool so that is when he figured it out. Blowing his nose... that was like a kindergarten thing! But my 2.5 year old can blow his nose. Kids are weird.
But we still don't spit for toothpaste because that is how he gets his fluoride (we do not have fluoridated water). The dentist is totally okay with that so we don't have to do fluoride drops.

@graceandjoy: Maybe I will try showing him a video. We use fluoride toothpaste too, which our dentist told us to use, but just the tiniest amount.
@KT326: Kids are weird. I don't understand the nose blowing resistance.

Oh man. Enjoy it while it lasts. My 3 year old has been spitting out of anger for a year. She's also been blowing her nose, sometimes with tissue and occasionally not, for about a year.

My daughter is the same age as your son (almost 4) and she’s been spitting out toothpaste for at least a year. I’m sure it’s not really a set in stone milestone though, seems like one that every kid does differently!! Has he watched you spit?

@QBbride: He has! And DH, and DH has tried to show him when they've been in a pool together. He has a dentist appointment in a few weeks, I'll probably ask about it then.

We do “rinse and spit” for tooth brushing and have since she was 2? So Dixie cup of water and then she spits.
