I cook and bake quite a bit, and would love LO to help me with some of the baking prep. What age do you think is appropriate? If your LO is already helping you, how did you start?

E "helps" me with bake prep sometimes, usually just by helping to whisk dry ingredients together. He's also gotten up on a stool and helped me stir things. We started around 14 months? When it's baking he stands on a step stool at the kitchen table.
Forgive the mess of a table.

We started at 18 months and he mostly just dumps stuff into the mixer and turns it on. Cooking started at about 2 years old and daddy works with him on everything including sharp knife cutting.

@lovehoneybee: so cute! I wouldn't feel comfortable with LO helping yet (she's 16 months now) because I know she would pick up the bowl and dump it over her head!

@HabesBabe: Heh, I was prepared for that, actually! He did great, until I added the applesauce, and then he started putting his hands in and eating it!

@lovehoneybee: So cute! Psshh, i think super tidy, immaculate kitchen counters belong to people who don't cook/bake!
@brownie: Maybe i'll start this weekend!

I started a couple of months ago at 16 months. And now she has to help whenever I bake. I let her pour ingredients in, mix, mash, and she's great at buttering muffin tins
We started with just pulling up a little night stand to the counter and having her watch me. I would let her feel all the different textures and let her do simple things like pick up pieces of banana and put them in a bowl.
I would post a pic of her helping if this was gold.

We started when she was old enough to stand supported (8 months, I think). At first it was just giving her some ingredients and utensils to explore with and taste. Now she helps with real cooking tasks, scooping lard onto a spoon to grease a pan, sprinking salt and pepper on things, kneading dough... I try to keep it low key, make sure it's something she can have success with (so if I'm whisking and she wants to but I can't afford to have her spill half without messing up the recipe I might just give her a whisk and some flour in a bowl to work with), and not have too many expectations. We have fun cooking together. Ellie isn't too terribly interested, but she will always show up if there is a bowl or spoon to lick! I would love it if one of the girls ended up being interested in cooking.

Well at 13 months she like to watch the mixer, so I make sure to have her on my hip where she can see it go around and around, I can't wait utnil she can help, but we have a few months before that!

I think we started around 18 months and we're slowly moving up to what she can help with. She likes to crack the eggs and stir stuff.

I think it was around 18 months when I started to let DD bake and cook with me. I let her shake the spice bottles into our recipe. She stirs and mixes.
...I unfortunately can't let her get too involved still, even at 2 years old. She really like to muck and destroy..so things can get pretty messy! lol
