LO is 5.5 months & can sit lightly assisted (like leaning against something) and has started to be able to sit up on her own by supporting herself with one hand while playing with the other. Last night she sat up unassisted & without "tripoding" for maybe 5-10 seconds. Clearly she has a ways to go to master sitting but she is on her way.
Anyway, for the sake of the baby book, when do you "count" it?

When he was sitting up unassisted (no hands, no leaning) and was solid at it. That was around 7 months or so.

We personally considered it sitting straight up, unassisted (no hands or leaning). 6.5 months or so for us? Happened the same day he crawled, lol!

When I didn't have to put a pillow behind her for fear of her falling back haha, just about 6 months

@dreamocracy: Ha, I agree that's a pretty good way of determining it! If you feel secure leaving them sitting there without a pillow or you there to catch them.

I'm going to count it when I'm confident he's not going to fall over. 6.5 months and not there yet

@Grace: See, then we could totally count it by your measurement. She can go up to 10 seconds or so without wobbling.
The baby book I have is like a calendar with stickers, so I have to pick a day when she achieves milestones!

@daniellemybelle: I figure it's much easier to count the first wobbly sit than figure out when she's sitting stably.

With both my kids it was really obvious. one day they were super wobbly or tripoding and the next they were sitting perfectly. You'll know! ( It was close to their 6 month birthday, and my cue to start BLW.)

When she could sit up and not fall over and didn't need support.

When he could sit unassisted and I was not worried he would fall over. I think around 6 months.
