i have a different mind now about STTN for kiddos. with my first, i said she didn't until 13 months when we sleep trained/night weaned, but in reality, she occasionally slept 9-10 hours and her wake ups were usually only 1 after 5 months, which was doable. now with DD2, she's up 2-4 times a night at 4 months and i'm so tired!!

What definition of sttn? The technical 6 hours or not up until actual morning? I voted sleeping the whole night through from 7pm to 7am. That happened for us about a week before he turned one.

If it makes you feel better my EFF baby still doesn't sttn at 5 months. Not outrageous but his sister did. He's slept 8-5 once and like 10-5 once.

If you mean sttn=the whole night and not having to wake up and nurse until we're all up for the day, then just before 5 months.
persimmon / 1281 posts
@birdofafeather: @2littlepumpkins: we're at 2 wake ups 7.5 months in. He goes to sleep on his own for naps and nights and I've tried CIO for MOTN to no avail. I'm tired
@kiddosc: I changed it! Yea the whole night. I don't buy that crap of 5 hours is considered sttn. Nope!

She STTN (7pm-7am straight) from when we sleep trained at like 5 months on until 9 months or so. For the last two months, we've had back to back illnesses ongoing so that has pushed us back into nighttime fun zone, because I'm not going to let her cry if I think she has a sore throat, which I always do. At least I can just nurse her and she calms down and goes right back to sleep.

She was 16 months before she slept from 7 to 6 with no wake ups every night. We were down to one for a long time before that though.

@Portboston: I told people that my kids were STTN by 12 weeks because they were sleeping 10:00 - 5:00, which is also when I was sleeping. If they weren't waking ME up, that felt like STTN to me.
But by your definition, neither of my kids STTN until after they turned one.

@Portboston: yeah that sounds like hunger which sounds tiring!!! Any solids yet? My ds is chubby and I feel he could drop his feeding but he does eat a bunch usually at 1amish, so I figure nothing I can do...
persimmon / 1281 posts
@Adira: that makes sense. And i would agree if it's not disrupting your sleep, it counts as sleeping through the night!
persimmon / 1281 posts
@2littlepumpkins: right?? He's a big boy. Weight is in the 60s and height is in the high 90s. He eats and goes right back to sleep so I know it's hunger. We're doing BLW so he does eat but how much he swallows is questionable. I think I'm going to try more pouches to fill that tummy up!

My first LO had one wake up around 5/6am from 3 months until he actually STTN at 11 months. I didn't mind the one wake up because he would go right back to sleep (bed at 9pm, up around 7:30am).
LO2...not so much. 7 months old and he's still up 3-4 times a night

There's no option for me. 13.5 months when we weaned.
Eta - he did it very occasionally after 8 months. As in a few times a night. After 12 months he did it for a few weeks. Then stopped. Then was consistent after we totally weaned.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
He started at 2 months and I thought we were set (hahaha) but, now, he started STTN (7pm-6am or so) at 7 5 months.

7 months here and still 3-5 times a night. It's unusual for an EBF baby to sleep through the night on their own much before a year.

At 9 months she started sttn consistently, as in I went to bed and didn't have to wake up before 6. We did CIOfoe falling asleep much younger but I was never able to train her not to wake up.
The new baby already often sttn, like 9 or 10 until 6. It's not consistent but she is not even 12 weeks yet!
pear / 1837 posts
By your definition, not until she was 21 months (DD1). DD2 is 3 months and only wakes once, usually between 2-4 then goes back to sleep until the entire house is up for the day.
pomelo / 5000 posts
Well, I don't know if I should vote b/c I started feeding her solids around 4 months, but she is still breastfeeding. I think I can say she started to STTN close to one year. Colds and all the other usual suspects set us back.

@Portboston: take this with a grain of salt since I didn't ebf or do this myself But I've seen it mentioned here a few times. Could your SO try going in for the motn wake ups? Ive heard that since you're the milk machine they want to nurse when you go in. But if a man goes in they get the hint that nursing is over.
Again, no experience, but this popped into my mind when I saw you tried CIO to no avail.
Also, the book 12 Hours by 12 Weeks has tips on night weaning for ebf babies. (And don't worry, I didn't read it till after 12 weeks either!)

10 months for first time but t was sporadic, got more consistent around 15 months. At 2 and no longer nursing, we still have wake ups - sometimes every night for a week or so, other times we go weeks without one. The most helpful thing for me was accepting that wake ups are a part of life with a child and for at least 5 years or so I can expect them to happen somewhat regularly.

She's 12.5 months and recently had a period of sleeping through the night but now she's back to one to two wake-ups. I am VERY tired.
I definitely think she is waking out of habit and because she likes milk, but it's a hard habit to break. If I go in to comfort her, she stands up, signs for milk, points to the glider where we nurse, and cries in a very angry voice; I generally find it hilarious except for the fact that I am exhausted when it happens.
My DH has a lot of trouble with sleep, so I am generally on night duty. But he's doing the first wake-up now and can get her back to sleep without milk. We're hoping we can get her to STTN before we both die of exhaustion

Question! If you are exclusively breastfeeding, do you pump in the middle of the night? My boobs would explode at this point if I didn't pump or feed every three hours.
persimmon / 1281 posts
@pachamama: your boobs end up adjusting to baby's needs
@sarac: I know. I just need some false hope at this point lol
@Foodnerd81: yay new baby!!!!!
@SweetiePie: we have tried that. Unfortunately DS cries until I come in and nurse him. Granted we don't let it go more then 10 min but I think he'd cry for an hour. He has amazing stamina! I'm going to look into that book!!!

Baby unicorns in my house. 12 weeks with DD1 and 8 weeks with DD2. Both had occasional periods with wakeups due to illness, teeth, and milestones but never for more than a few days.
DD3 is seven weeks and getting close with one short feed at 4am.
persimmon / 1281 posts
@winniebee: your option is the last one cause gurrrrl you deserve a nap

@Portboston: can't hurt to just try! And if it doesn't agree then nix it. Good luck!

16-18 months for my first, 2-3 months for my second (no sleep training with either).
eggplant / 11408 posts
14 months, when we weaned. We did it all at the same time, because I was out of town. She went from 2-3 comfort nurse waking a night to STTN in 2 nights with only DH there. We co-slept then and did for a few weeks when I got back. Then she slept in her crib in our room. It was glorious. Then the 18 month sleep regression hit, and we had to sleep train to get any peace.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@pachamama: for a while, I did, because her sleep was so unpredictable. But I just took the edge off with the hand pump-an ounce or two each side. Well, that's a lie-sonrtimes, I needed to pump 3 on a side before I got relief. But yes, you will level out eventually. Until then, do what yiu gotta do!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Right about 8.5 months and he's been doing 7pm-7am, give or take 30 min in the morning. About a week after we got him to STTN, we ran out of frozen BM, so now he's combo fed.
honeydew / 7909 posts
With lo1, he didn't sttn until like 16 months or so. Lo2 is a few days shy of 9 months and she still gets up 3x a night.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
8 & 6 weeks for LO 1 & 2. I was well rested.
LO 3 is 7 months old and she still wakes up on most nights! Sleep went downhill around the 4-5 month mark.
pomelo / 5326 posts
For totally sleeping through the night, like 7-7, it was at 7 months. However, from 10w on she only had one wake up around 5am for a feed and went right back down. At the time I counted that as STTN because it was at least 10 hours with no wake up.
pomegranate / 3580 posts
We night weaned at 15 months and she started mostly STTN then, but it wasn't a consistent thing until we completely weaned at 18 months.
nectarine / 2797 posts
My unicorn gave us 12 hours starting at around 10 weeks, but then stopped her entire second year, so, not all magic.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
10 months. We sleep trained at 5.5 for putting herself down independently, did CIO multiple times in the MOTN to no avail.
apricot / 443 posts
This thread is making me feel better. My 7.5 month old still wakes 3-4x per night. She puts herself to sleep for naps and night and goes down without a problem. I've tried several night weaning techniques just to drop one of the feedings and they have all been huge failures! Good to know I'm not alone.
