3 weeks after giving birth. We went out to dinner and I had half a light beer.

Not for awhile... probably when she was around a year old, I had a glass of wine. Not a big drinker so it wasn't a big deal to me at all.

I'm almost 7 weeks pp and still haven't had a drink! I kind if forgot I was allowed to. So used to not drinking!
What is the rule of thumb with drinking and BFing? How long should you wait after having a drink? Is there a difference betwern having a glass of wine and say, a margarita?

@Mrs. Jump Rope: everyone's comfort level is different, but generally if you're good to drive you're good to nurse. You'd pretty much have to be dead for the amount of alcohol in your milk to be at a level that would affect baby.

@catomd00: interesting! So, why have I heard so much about pumping and dumping then?

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I think it's kind of a myth that if you pump and dump it will get out of your system faster? I don't know. The only difference I could think of between a glass of wine and a margarita would be how much alcohol is in it, which would of course depend on the size of the margarita or the glass of wine. Oh the other thing w pumping and dumping could be that if you drank too much and were engorged while waiting for your system to metabolize the alcohol you could pump and dump and then just feed baby a bottle that you pumped earlier.
It's our anniversary so I am definitely going to have a nice glass of wine tonight!

@avivoca: whaaat.
3 weeks! I have drank in moderation and breastfed for a year now. The amount of alcohol that ends up in breastmilk is minuscule. When I do imbibe a lot I pump & dilute with formula.

I drank when we got home from the hospital and usually have one or two drinks a night (mama needs her little helper at the end of long days!) I've have 3 nights out since my son was born where I've drank probably 5-7 units of alcohol.

@daniellemybelle: The Evans' aren't big drinkers. I have been binging on baked goods since about five minutes after I delivered though.

She was born on Dec 11 and I had a sip or two of Proseco on New year's eve. But I'm not a big drinker so that was probably the only alcohol I had all year!

Around 7 or 8 weeks? I had my first night out away from baby with a friend and we got Mexican food and I had a small margarita and it was super delicious

@PrincessBaby: yep. Same. Only barely half a glass though. But it was glorious.

The night we got home from the hospital! And every night that first week, haha.
@Mrs. Jump Rope: You would want to pump and dump if you drank so much that you can feel it - then it's potentially not safe to nurse. And some people just don't feel comfortable drinking and nursing in general, so they do it. I never pumped and dumped and I drank throughout our breastfeeding journey, just never enough to get tipsy!

I don't even remember when I first had alcohol after giving birth. I know it wasn't that soon after...maybe a month or two? I'm not a huge drinker and I was such a lightweight after not drinking for so long that I was irrationally paranoid about getting wasted after 1 drink and not being able to nurse my LO. I had coffee and sushi almost immediately after, though
@Mrs. Jump Rope: "There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom’s comfort — pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk." This Kellymom article is great and talks more about it.
