My son has a temper -- and he freaks out during diaper changes (has for a few months). Rolls over, wants to play with stuff on the tape, wants to try to stand on the table. If we do it on the floor, he flips and craws away. Diaper changes take 15 mintues.
This morning, he was flipping and not letting me put a diaper on him. He is so strong!! I finally looked at him and said "NO" very firmly. And then he cried. I feel badly!
How young is too young to discipline? My son is 10 months.

I started saying "no" firmly a while ago. But it's mostly for him hitting or biting, which I think deserves a real act of discipline. For things like diaper changes, which he's a absolute terror about, I find counting or singing (aka distraction) works better. I can't make him behave during something he doesn't enjoy, but I can try to make it more fun.

We told our Lo no early on.. But didnt start giving her time outs until she was.. 18 months old? I forget!

We started saying "no" very early and she has been given brief time outs. She's 19 months.

We started time outs at 18 months (for safety violations like jumping on the couch or trying to ride the dog). She is 20 months old now and diaper changes are still like wrestling an alligator so I just use whatever I can to distract her.

We started "not for babies" and no touch at 6 months old. He learned very quickly not to touch the cord in the living room long before he was 1.

Our pediatrician's practice recommends starting disciplining at 9 months.

I do the firm "No" now at 7.5 months. He pinches and bites so I really want to discourage that behavior. I also do it when he's getting into something he shouldn't, like the dog's bowls. He usually gets a defiant smile and tries to go back towards it. I think he knows what "no" means, but not sure it works!

Ah anytime I say no he laughs...and if I say it firmly he cries! He doesn't do anything bad. It's jut the paper changes that kill me! And eating paper.

@Rubies: How does she do with timeouts? We need something like that for LO but I keep thinking he's not going to get it and it's just going to lead to a lot of frustration and even more tears.

I think we may have done time outs with DD starting 18 mo but my memory is foggy. We talked about starting with DS now that he's 18 mo and he just seems so young. Maybe if he were more emotionally mature like DD was we would.. But for now we do the distraction method..

@Mrs. Yoyo: She is just starting to realize that a "time out" is not a good thing. We bought a bath mat that sits on the floor in our living room and when she's in a time out, I'll sit her down on the mat and make her face the couch (away from the distractions of her toys) and I'll sit with her and count to 30. If she tries to stand up or anything, I sit her back down and firmly tell her "no". The longest I've ever given her was one minute. DH was watching and it was so painful for him! He was begging me to let her go after, like, 10 seconds!

@winniebee: my son does this too! It is exhausting and we are trying to find effective ways to deal with it. Distraction only works sometimes and saying no doesn't seem to do much either. I feel your pain!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Usually when she's put in a time out, she's NOT upset or crying. Usually she knows that she's done something she wasn't supposed to be doing. It's almost comedic, I swear she sighs as she's being carried off and plopped on the mat. If she was already upset and crying and throwing a tantrum or something, then she wouldn't get a time out. Instead, I'd just take her away and distract her with something else.

9 months. At the 9 month check up the doctor asked if he understood "no" yet... so we tell him no and then redirect. Nothing major but we started a month ago.

We've been doing it for at least a month. I always try to make sure I make eye contact or at least touch her hand while I say "no." One thing we've been working on is to stop her from pulling up on the side tables in our living room, and we've seen great progress! She pretty much leaves them alone now.
