T is 7 months and sleeps in a bare bones crib all night still. Its starting to get a little colder now so I'm wondering about covering his bottom half with a blanket. But I'm also worried about SIDS still.

@Danizaur: we were thinking about trying at a year. Dh was playing with him and a towel the other day and he got it tangled around his head so it's not looking good. The few nights it got really cold here but not cold enough for heat we did cotton pants and tee under a fleece footed sleeper. It seemed to keep everything pretty warm.

We still don't at 1 y and 8 months but we will starting this fall. It's not so much we worry about SIDS but it just seems so futile to use a blanket since it's 100% certain that the blanket will not stay on her and instead will end up underneath her very quickly. So that's the reason why we still use XL size fleece Halo sleep sacks, lots of layers and heaters last winter.

With DD1, we used heavier weight sleep sacks - Halo sleep sacks were our favourite and are easy to use. If it was particularly cold, I'd put a log sleeve onesie under her fleece jammies and then use the sleep sack. She always seemed warm enough...
With DD2, we're much more lax and she's slept with a blanket for ages. It was a light A+A blanket when she was younger, tucked snug around her bottom half and tucked under the mattress, but once she started moving around, I worried about her getting tangled up in it and strangling herself. Now we use a smaller, heavier fleece blanket that she can't get tangled up in and it's fine. I'm not worried about suffocation - she sleeps on her belly, can get into a sitting position easily, and she's still in our room, so I can check on her frequently. She's also 7 months old.
If you're worried though, I think the sleep sacks are a good way to go...

Around 18 months I started to use heavier blankets. Our house has no heat so we have definitely used long underwear and doubled up on sleep sacks on cold nights!

C is14 months and there is no way a blanket would stay on her. But I'm not worried about SIDS as much as her getting tangled and waking herself up.

I put a blanket overLO who is 22 months after she falls asleep, but it doesn't stay on all night

Around this summer, so he was 20 months? but only very light A&A blankets, and they NEVER stay on him--he ends up hugging them. So they don't do much to keep him warm.
I would do a heavy sleep sack, or onesie under footed sleeper.

My son STILL doesn't stay under a blanket, he'll be 4 at the end of this year.
He was in sleepsacks until he turned 2, there are a lot of weights/styles available, so if you go that route, you should find something that fits your needs.

Xander's 18 months and we let him sleep with A&A swaddle blankets. So not really much for warmth. But he's also all over the place during the night, so a blanket wouldn't stay on him anyway! We let him have an A&A swaddle blanket probably around 7-8 months though (and he used to wrap them around his head...)

He started sleeping with a minky blanket around 10 months. He takes it off after a couple of hours because he's a wiggly sleeper though

My DS wore those fleece footed sleepers until age 4 - then he stopped and starting using a blanket.
My only issue with blankets is that most kids will kick them off and if its winter- brrrrr - that why I preferred using fleece footed sleepers over their pjs

A knit blanket with holes is probably fine at this point. I have a minky blanket in my 7 month olds crib because she loves rubbing her face on it. I tuck it in the corner though so only a small portion is exposed. She also has a minky lovey. I started with naps to see how she did. This might sound weird but I also would put her blanky over her face to see how well she could get it off! She sleeps on top of the tucked in blanket but I am not comfortable yet untucking it at night. I would be comfortable with a knit blanket though since the holes make it breathable.

Around 12 months when we stopped using the sleep sack since it was getting warmer out. She moves around so much before she falls asleep so is never under it unless we go put it back on her. But she still moves so much in her sleep.

LO was born in Nov and we swaddled her in a warm fuzzy blanket from day 1. First it was in the rnp and then in the crib. Now that she's older we no longer swaddle but she still sleeps w her fuzzy blankets and she loves them. They are her comfort and although they never stay on her and she moves around a good bit, she's never gotten tangled up in one. Usually she'll end up hugging it or nestled into it with it between her legs or draped across her mid section.

LO is almost 14 months and still in a sleep sack. There is no way she'd stay under a blanket...she moves around too much! I don't plan to ditch the sleep sack for awhile.

last fall LO was about 10 months old and when the weather got cold enough, we put him in a footed sleeper and fleece sleep sack. this year i'm not sure what we're going to do because even though we put an A&A blanket over him to begin with, it never stays on.
we have used a vornado heat fan in the past (the HVAC in our old place was screwy and LO's room got no heat if the door was closed) and really liked it.

Just a few months ago, I started giving her an A&A blanket. Before, it was fuzzy sleepy jammies with the feeties. She stopped sleep sacks around 9 months because I forgot to pack them on a trip and she slept fine without them, so I said screw it!

Around 12 months she got attached a "blankie" and used that to cover up with, when we moved her to her big girl bed around 18 months she had a sheet/comforter that she never really used. She just cuddles the blankets.

Just a few months ago at home...30ish months.

She slept with a blanket from birth (bad mommy!) until she moved to her crib and moved around too much for it. then we switched to a sleep sack, but now she's in between sizes so we dropped the sleep sack and tried using a blanket again, but it's just not worth it - she is all over the place and it wakes her up. SO we weren't worried about sids, but i have a very mobile baby and i can't imagine she'll ever sit still enough for a blanket lol. we're hoping the heat will come on in our building soon and solve the problem!

Before I let him have anything in his crib, I tested him to make sure he could pull it off of his face. So when he was awake, I would put the blanket over his face. If he immediately pulled it off, I was comfortable that he could do so in the middle of the night. I should add that I started with the AA security blankets.
However, we always used sleep sacks for warmth b/c he constantly kicks off his blankets now at almost 2. I'm going to have to invest in a lot of fleece footie pj's b/c he will not allow us to put him in a sleep sack anymore after not using one all summer.

We started at a year with an A&A style blanket.
During the winter months, we'll keep the A&A blanket but I will put him in fleece, footed, sleepers to make sure he stays warm!

She sleeps with a blanket at daycare and has since 12 weeks. At home, I don't know when I will transition her to a blanket. She just sleeps in footie pajamas.

We used a sleep sack until 21 months when she refused to get in it anymore.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
we used sleep sacks until age 2 then used a blanket. but they still don't keep the blankets on so i dress them in pjs according to the temp.

For winter when he was under 1, we did fleece footed sleepers and maybe a sleep sack. After 1, he has a mid weight A&A toddler blanket. He's into jammies now, so trying to go back to the fleece footed sleeper will be hard if not impossible. I got thermal pj tops and fleece bottoms for him.

@catomd00: I "played" where's baby with my LO and a blanket to train him how to remove it from his face haha.
We are starting to phase in a blanket now at 15 months. He doesn't keep on for me (although he does at daycare) but I'd like to keep at it because once he's in a toddler bed it will be easier.
ETA- Last winter we used sleeps sacks and if blankets don't work out this winter I will be buying some more. We love the fleece halos. Right now since it's only somewhat chilly I've been doing fleece footed sleepers on their own.

We used a sleep sack until close to 18 months. Now she's two and falls asleep with a blanket but loses it quickly during the night so I can't really count on it for warmth anyway.
honeydew / 7504 posts
I want to say around 10 or 11 months, we started covering him with an A&A blanket (sometimes 2). I felt ok with that because it was SO lightweight. This winter we may use a heavier blanket (he'll be 2 in January).

@avivoca: our daycare uses blankets, too.
We have used them for a while, once she outgrew her sleep sacks. She didn't need them much in the summer, though. Now we cover her legs with a fleece one after she falls asleep. She is not a very mobile sleeper, so it does not move much.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@LovelyPlum: I need to talk to daycare to see how she does there. H is so mobile in her sleep and normally sleeps face down on her knees. I wonder if she is doing that because she's cold?
I plan on adding flannel sheets to the bed this winter for an extra layer of warmth.

C is 26 months and still sleeps sans blanket. Either a sleep sack during the colder months or thicker PJs.
I don't worry about SIDS anymore, but she plays with A&A blankets/swaddles and calls them her "scapes" (capes). I gave her one a few months ago for naptime and she walked around her crib like a ghost... and then bumped into the side of her crib and wailed.
