I read that popcorn is a choking hazard and therefore haven't served it yet to my 2.5 year old. When did you give it to your toddler?

I never knew it was a hazard until after I had given it to her- which is weird since I'm sort of paranoid about choking! She definitely had it by around two. I hardly ever eat popcorn though so it's never around the house.
I did see our pediatrician this week and she said no restrictions at this point, she is almost 2 and 3/4.

I voted 1.5 but it might have been closer to 1. His baby sitter was giving it to her kids (9 months older and 9 months younger) and keeping a close eye on them so I wasn't too worried. We're working on teaching him not to eat kernels now at 2.

DH let her eat it at 2. I wasn't ok with it. I am ok with it now at 3.

I gave it to him when he was 3.5 - that was only because I had some (have been snacking on that lately - we don't usually have it in the house before), and DS kept thinking his corn on the cob is "popcorn". So I had to show him what real popcorn looks and tastes like. He still thinks corn on the cob is popcorn though afterwards.

Popcorn is a serious choking hazard. I'm holding out until at least 4 (or 5) before LO gets popcorn. Children under 4 are at the highest risk (their airways are small (the back of a toddler’s throat narrows to the diameter of a straw) and the way their eating abilities develop makes them more susceptible to choking). And (other than not giving them unsafe foods and watching out for small objects) there's really nothing you can do to prevent choking. You can literally be right next to them and not know it is going to happen.

I started around a year and a half because my son wanted whatever I was eating and I went through a popcorn craving phase, but I'd break up the pieces so I knew he wasn't getting a kernel or a piece that was too big.

She had it once or twice around 1 5. Now at 2.5 she eats it once or twice a week. She wants to be like Peck from Sheriff Callie lol she knows that we don't eat the "balls".

We started at 2 with lots of supervision and talking about which ones she should eat (fully popped) and why. We do have it as a snack from time to time but when she was younger we tried not to eat it until after bedtime.

@Adira: me either. I wasn't even the first to give it to him. I found out it was a hazard after finding out he loves it and decided it wasn't worth backtracking. He's 2.5 now and it's one of the few things he will eat every time

I think around one I would bite off the big fat puffy parts and share it with him when I ate popcorn. Then I found out DH had been giving popcorn to DS on the reg when they went on their Friday father/son bank runs (apparently they give out popcorn out of an old fashion movie popcorn machine in the bank lobby??) after he turned 1!! DH insisted DS was fine and that he always watched him and that he drank a ton of water with it (bc it was salty and buttery, duh). We don't eat it that often but yeah DS is 20 months and I just make sure the popcorn he gets is fully popped and I usually stick it in a snack trap so that it ends up breaking up a bit.

We started early, around 1.5 years old. LO2 has a lot of food allergies, and homemade popcorn is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable snacks for him to eat. He's 2.5 years old now, and loves snacking on a big bowl of popcorn.

We make air pop a lot and DD2 definitely had it at 1.5. I'm honestly more worried about grapes than popcorn! We're always right there so I'm not worried.

Somewhere between 1.5-2. I voted 1.5 but I think closer to 2. He actually really likes those Pop Corners, which are just popcorn chips (corn, oil, salt) as a snack. I feel a little better about those.
