We did a month of lessons at the YMCA at 8 months, and she was pretty used to the water. Started lessons at a swim school at almost 3, and she's much more able to actually swim, and I feel more comfortable with her in the water. I think a lot of it has to do with the program you use, too.

At 6-7 months we did 6 weeks of a mommy and me class just to feel comfortable in the water, learn to dunk her head in, spit water out, etc. I might enroll her again in the winter.

We tried at 8 months and LO hated it. We haven't really been back since and she is now 3. I think we'll start bringing her to the pool again soon and start lessons at 4.

We started actual swim lessons (without a parent) right when she turned 3 in March.

We did parent child classes at 6 months! He's continued pretty steadily, and this summer just passed his first "real class".

We started a Mommy and Me class from 6 months to about a year (sporadically). He thought it was ok. Then the instructor had a death in the family and quit teaching. He's gone a few times with DH (who used to teach swim lessons). He kind of hates the water (now he's 2.75). He's starting rescue swim lessons in September (ISR). He's so going to hate it, but I think it's important, and friends who have done it now have kiddos who are little fish and love the water, so here's hoping.
Assuming this goes well, I'll probably start the rescue lessons with DS2 around 8 or 9 months.

We didn't do any formal lessons but started taking her to a pool regularly during the summers at 1. We both were swim teachers for kids when we were in high school so would teach her a few things and each year we've focused on it a bit more. she learned to swim at 3 and now at 4 is a little fish. I think this winter or next summer we'll finally do real lessons to help get all the swim mechanics taught.
