once i make it to my long term goal of one year, i'm going to let DS take the reins on weaning himself off the boob as far as our am/pm nursing sessions....but as far as daytime/pumping at work, I WILL BE DONEEEEEEE. less than 5 months!!!!!!

I'm pumping 2x at work now. Next month will be 1x. Woohoo! Then in October I'll be only doing AM/PM sessions until her birthday on 11/27. Her birthday will be the last day I express milk, hopefully.

I think I'm going to stop pumping (I ep) when school starts at the end of August, although I might see how much I get with just 1x a day. I have frozen milk for about 4 months after I stop. He turns 1 on Oct 7, but his adjusted birthday isn't until mid- Jan and I kind of want to make it until then. (Although he has always gotten 50% formula.)

This is interesting to think about... So do bf babies generally only nurse am/pm after one year? I know it varies by kid, but I find it hard to wrap my mind around the fact that, in 6 months, I might only be nursing him 2x a day?!

@allison: i think that's the general consensus. esp for working moms who want to quit pumping ASAP. i plan on stopping pumping at 1 year, and transition DS to cow's milk. i think the am/pm sessions are more about the bonding time too, so "we" might not be ready to completely cut those out til after 1 year

I ditched the pump at 10.5 months. I was so glad to see the back of it. DD stopped wanting to nurse before bedtime about 4 weeks ago. She basically just started looking at me like I was crazy whenever I brought the boob near her mouth. Now, at 13.5 months she only nurses first thing in the morning and I'm pretty sure that session won't last long either!

@mrsjyw: I'm glad that's your plan since I have been thinking about the same thing! Starting January, no more free boob access (: I hope by then she'll be exclusively on to night feelings but I'll be okay with mornings too (:

E will be a year on Thursday. I stopped pumping 3 months ago (and giving him formula on the rare times he might need to be fed when I'm not with him--like when MIL is babysitting for more than an hour or two.) We're down to 1-2 good nursing sessions a day, the first around 5AM (when he doen't STTN), and the second when he wakes up for the day.
He "drive-by nurses" a TON during the day, though. He'll latch on to each boob for literally 5-10 seconds each (or will go back and forth between them) before running off. I can't imagine he's getting much...it never feels like enough to trigger a letdown, and I think at this point it's just for comfort (and he just had 4 more teeth come in...)
So we're at 1-2 sessions a day. My long-term goal was 1 year, and we're about there, and anything after is lagniappe. I'm not going to force a wean, but I feel like he'll wean himself before too long. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

DS turns 1 on Sept. 9. I plan to continue nursing in am/pm but to stop pumping over several weeks, dropping one session each week. I have to travel for work in early December so that will likely be the end of our nursing relationship unless he wants to try after I get back, although I may not have a supply anymore.

11 months...just this week! he's taking 1 bottle day of whole milk and nursing am/pm.

I just cut down to pumping 2x daily at work, and fingers crossed this sleep training works because she's cut out two night feedings all on her own within 2 days of starting it!
That will put us at 5x nursing/pumping sessions daily. Sometime in September I hope to drop another pumping session and then around her birthday I would love to stop pumping at work altogether and just do AM/PM/night feeds (if she still wakes at night at that point).
I have about 75oz in my freezer stash and I am able to add another 2-4 ounces a day to it while I still pump so much. I never thought weaning would be so complicated (emotionally and logistically)!

@allison: a good rule of thumb for a baby who's extended breastfeeding is that at twelve months breastmilk should make up 80% of their nutrition, 50% at eighteen months then 20% at two years (from Kellymom). From what friends have told me daytime nursing really reduces once baby works out that solids will give them the same feeling if fullness as milk does. FWIW I can't imagine my wee girl only nursing twice a day once she's a year old!

weaning seems so complicated! i have no clue what i am going to do honestly. i would love to keep her bedtime session and morning session, but maybe cut back on a few day feeds with whole cow's milk at a year?

My LO self weaned by 14 months. At a year she was only nursing 2x a day (am and pm). She just really took to solids and ate plenty during the day and when I tried to offer her the boob she only latched for 10-15 seconds. Pretty soon she was barely latching for the am and pm nursing sessions so I just stopped offering and she did not care and never asked

I went back to work last week (LO is 11.5m) and have stopped pumping already (although I was only pumping 1x in a 7hr shift anyway). I haaaaaaate it. Hate hate hate. And he's not EBF anyways so *shrug*
We still nurse 3-5 times a day when I get home until bedtime (he sttn, finally!) though....but I'm leaning towards being done more & more each day.
My plan is to offer from the source as long he wants to, fuck the pump, supplement as usual until 1 yr & then switch to a cows milk alternative. I'm leaning towards homemade almond milk.
