Sadie still sleeps with her white noise machine, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't need it anymore. I'm afraid of taking it away, because I don't want to mess up her sleep.
When did you stop using the white noise machine?

My LO just turned two and we finally switched over to using just a fan on a low speed instead of his white noise machine this summer. But now we'll probably have to keep using the fan even when it gets cooler again!

Still using ours at 11 months but we've turned it down a lot. There are a few times when grandmas put her to bed and they forget to turn it on, and she sleeps fine. At the cottage we don't bring it and she sleeps better there than at home. It's become such a habit for me to turn it on for bedtime and naps but I could probably just forget about it now. I'm curious to hear when others quit using it.

LO is 26m and I have no plans to stop any time soon. She doesn't *need* it to sleep because we never bring it with us when we travel. But I like it more for noise cancelling especially with a baby coming in 2 months.

We have no plans to stop! I don't necessarily think he needs it to sleep, but it allows DH and I to make a moderate amount of noise in the kitchen and living room without waking him up--clean up after dinner, have people over, watch an action movie, etc.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@locavore_mama: Same. She can sleep without it, but her bedroom is right next to ours, so I like the noise-canceling aspect!

I'm 32 and still like a fan blowing at night but we rely on the AC blower that is next to M and D's rooms.
nectarine / 2132 posts
LO is 22 months and we still blast it every night. He even turns it on when he knows it's bedtime, or if he's pretending to go night night. With a new baby on the way I have noooo plans of stopping it.

DD is 25 months and we still use it most nights, but there are nights when I purposely don't use it. She doesn't get it for daycare naps, and my parents don't use it on Tues/Thurs for naps. I don't want her to NEED it as she gets older.

@hilsy85: This is why we use it. We've forgotten to turn it on, or didn't have it and L (12 Months) slept totally fine. We like it for the noise we make! haha.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Like everyone else I have no plans to stop bc I like that it cancels out our noise. She sleeps fine without it but I don't want to tiptoe around the house. Also, no plans to stop with baby #2 on his/her way...I don't want them waking each other

3 years and going strong. We just use a sleep sheep, and it's more of a comfort item than a necessity.

Ours died overnight once (batteries went dead) right when she turned six months and she actually slept better that night and for a few subsequent nights. I haven't used it much since because I feel like it doesn't help more than not using it.
pomelo / 5469 posts
We stopped using it around 3 months when we forgot to turn it on and realised it didn't make a difference!

I can't imagine a life without white noise in my baby's room! he sleeps without it at my mom's house during the day but I look at it as insurance for the noise my clumsy self makes at night!

@photojane: I'm with you! Xander's 16 months and still using the white noise. I don't even think he needs it because sometimes Hubs forgets to turn it on and he sleeps just fine, but I'm still afraid to stop!

I don't plan on stopping it lol. I know many adults who sleep with white noise!

J is 28 months and we have no plans to stop. We initially started only because we moved to a smaller apartment and the noise helps cancel out all other apartment noise and enables us to do things around the house without waking him up... He's become fairly dependent on it though. The second I turn it off, he springs awake. I'm not sure how I feel about him being dependent on it? But he sleeps so well with little interruption so I can't complain.

I've read that white noise isn't a sleep crutch in the same way that a paci, rocking, nursing, etc can be. We have no plans to stop because it's nice to be able to be loud when needed.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Same as PPs! He doesn't need it to fall asleep and has slept fine without it with no hindrance to his normal sleep schedule. But it's the noise-cancelling factor that we aren't ready to part with! Esp with plans to TTC#2 in the coming months!

I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. She goes down before 7, and we still have dishes to clean. Last night i made a smoothie and it was nice to know she couldn't actually hear it!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
We still use it at 3.5 years of age, via our air purifiers. But I don't mind using it, I even bring a white noise machine when we travel, especially in hotels.

Do turns three next month and we still use it but it's now more used as noise cancelling as her room is between ours and her sister's.

My DD is almost 6 and we still use it for noise cancelling. I think she does ok without it as well, but it's just part of the routine.
pomelo / 5628 posts
We still use ours at 18 months but I try to keep it as low as will work.
There was an article recently about potential negative affects either for hearing or attention...can't remember which and too lazy to look right now!
persimmon / 1273 posts
My LO is only 3 months but I have no plans to stop using it. It's the one sleep aid we have that I don't think matters if it lasts through adulthood. When he was still in our room, I really liked sleeping with white noise. We keep it fairly low, though.
@mrs green grass: I'm pretty sure, if we are speaking about the same research, that the study measured the decibels of popular sound machines and found that many of them could reach a level that would damage hearing. So if you're using the top volume right next to the baby, it could be bad, but the study didn't actually show that it definitely IS bad.
I read somewhere that a safe level is about the noise level of someone taking a shower, so I aim for a lower than that and keep it in the room but not right next to the baby.

I plan to use mine forever. We live on a busy street and the 3 am super loud garbage trucks and drunk people wake me up, too. I have a machine in her room and our room.
pomelo / 5628 posts
@gilmoregirl: that sounds right! I remember it getting me to be conscious of the volume, but not stop.
blogger / kiwi / 588 posts
We stopped at around 10 months and he was fine. We were using it for naps and nighttime sleep and sometimes we would forget to turn it on and he wouldn't mind. But with another baby on the way we might start using it again since they will be sleeping with us in the same room.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
still use it because the kids rooms are right next to each other. we keep the doors open in the summer because their rooms don't have ac but the living room ac is strong enough to keep their rooms cool. they are 4 1/2 and almost 3!
pomegranate / 3383 posts
We will use white noise until he tells us he doesn't want to use it anymore. He sleeps fine without it but it's more for us so that we can make as much noise as we want and we don't have to worry about our dog waking him up. In the summer he sleeps with the window open so it helps drown out outside noise too.
clementine / 806 posts
It's the only way to have company over or the TV on without it disturbing my kid's sleep. Plus with baby #2 on the way, it will all the more critical! Plus our sound machine is an air purifier. The fan just produces a whirring noise that happens to double as our sound machine. So really, I probably won't stop anytime soon!

neverrrrrrrr!!
hehe. no but seriously. it's in the hall between the nursery and O's room, so they'll both hear it. I still sleep better with white noise as an adult!

I still use a white noise machine so I don't see a problem with continuing with DS.

My husband is 35 and still uses white noise! I'm not planning on stopping any time soon (it's more helpful for her falling asleep than staying asleep!) but I'm so nervous about what to do for naps when she goes to daycare.
papaya / 10570 posts
I stopped around 5 months because someone on here posted a thread about white noise being bad for babies' hearing. My husband (a sound engineer and clearly the more scientifically minded of the two of us) completely disagreed with every point the article raised and every "source" cited but I couldn't shake the fear..... so I ditched the white noise!! It didn't seem to make much difference to her to be fair!
