I forgot to ask at DD's 2 year checkup. When did you switch your LO from whole milk to 2% or skim?

From years 1-2, we gave him whole milk and then switched him to low fat milk when he turned 2.

@Minnie_Girl: The fat is good for their brain development when they're very little, but whole milk is a big contributor to high cholesterol, among other things.

@Honeybee: That's interesting, I'd think that milk would be a perfectly healthy source of fat at any age.

I still drink whole milk... :T I like it creamy and fatty

@Minnie_Girl: Whole milk is like red meat; it's a source of "bad" cholesterol (aka LDL cholesterol) because it is high in saturated fat. Fat is good for you (especially little ones with developing brains), but saturated fats are less desirable than "good" fats like nuts, olive oil,, avocados, etc... So, generally, you want to limit saturated fats and up good fats to lower bad cholesterol and up your good cholesterol (aka HDL cholesterol).

Good question! I grew up drinking skim, but I know that babies need the fat. I want to switch my LO to skim asap so she gets used to it and likes it too.

We have always given DS 2%. We switched him to it at 1 year, so it has only been a few months, but the pediatrician said that 2% is just fine. He advised us to wait until DS is at least 2 or 3 before switching to 1% or skim, but DH drinks 2% so we'll probably keep him on it and not switch to skim.

we will give our LO whole milk all the time because thats what we drink. I honestly cant taste skim milk or 2%, it just tastes like water to me. we are however thinking of switching to soy milk but I dont know much about soy and kids so I will wait and talk to my pediatrician about that later.

We drink skim but Wagon Jr. drank whole milk until he turned 2. We switched to 2% but he wasn't gaining enough weight, so we switched back to whole and that's what he drinks now.

I would suppose it depends in my son's diet, rather than age. Right now he's not eating enough variety for me to consider switching.

I think my son's pediatrician recommended it when I was concerned about his eating around 2 y.o. b/c whole milk was making him too full during meals so she told me to start giving him 2%. At his 3 year check up she said to switch to 2% b/c whole milk is too fatty. And he's average in weight. We give him both depending on what we have in the fridge.

Our pediatrician told us we could switch from whole at DD's 2yr check up but we have opted to keep her on whole (I think because that is what DH drinks and he knows I wouldn't buy it if it wasn't for DD, I drink skim).

I know for my nephews it was around the 2 year mark so they wouldn't be drinking milk in place of meals.
