When did you drop the 5 point harness?
Minimum for the belt I believe is 4 years and 40lbs and when you can pass the 5 step challenge for belt position:

Recommendation is to keep them in the 5 point harness as long as the harness fits. We just bought the Britax click tight frontier and that could be a while because its one of the highest rated combo seats.

@T.H.O.U.: that test is for not using a booster at all
DS is almost 6.5 and still harnessed. He sits in a high back booster with seatbelt on the van ride to school every day and asked if he could do that at home - however his Frontier 85 says you need to be 45lbs and he is 43 so that's my excuse right now and he's fine with it.
I do have a Graco booster in DH's car that he uses a seat belt with and right now its more of a pain since its hard for him to do himself - he can easily do the 5 point alone

We have one for DS who is 4. We haven't used it yet though (since we don't have a car). Where we live there aren't any 5 point harness seats for his size.

Our nearly 5 year old is just barely 29-30 lbs, so she'll be in her Britax for probably another year. I'd love to get her into a booster so that we can fit all three kids in our Audi.

@lamariniere: really? I need something for my son when we visit this winter, I don't feel like lugging mine along, but maybe I will need to.
We have the Britax Frontier and a Graco Nautilus. He'll stay harnessed until he outgrows the weight and height requirements for the seats.

@Mamaof2: It was my understanding though that the belt still needs to fit properly regardless of if they are in a booster or in the regular seat. So first step would be passing the test in a booster. And then later on passing the same 5 step fit test in the regular vehicle seat.

@T.H.O.U.: yes but using a booster you have a belt guide so its hard for it not to fit properly, whereas a regular seat belt just goes against you -

We switched him at 4.5 (41 pounds and 42 inches). I will probably wait until DD is 5 and I'll get a booster with a back next time.
Does anyone know the recommended age for a backless booster vs booster with a back?
