J is 13mo, 30# and quite sturdy but I'm still nervous to move him to FF. When did you?
I know there have been posts on this but I can't find them.

I think the recommendation is to keep them rear facing until 2. We plan on rear facing for as long as we can.

The recommendation is to wait until minimum 2 years OR until the child has outgrown the limits of the seat (so easily longer with alot of the seats on the market today).....
With that, we will rf until age 4 (at the minimum), when the bone structure of the munchkins are mature enough to withstand the force of an accident front facing. Rear facing is 500% safer than forward facing so we will utilize that as long as we can (really we'd all be safer rf but the physics of that really isn't conducive to being able to drive. lol).
Here's some good info on the safety of rear facing

ETA: This had played a huge part in the seats we've chosen.... I want a Foonf sooo bad! I've heard they're even great for kids that don't like rf b/c they sit so much higher the child can see out the back window easier.
It's just incredibly important to us that our littles are as safe as can be in the car.

LO is 15 months old and in the 96th percentile for height. Her poor little legs are completely scrunched, but we're still following the recommendation and won't flip her until 2 years old. In Sweden (I believe it was Sweden), the current recommendation is 4. Basically it's MUCH safer the longer you can possibly keep them rear-facing.

DS is a teeny 20 lbs at 14 months so I think 2 years is a good goal for us. Who knows we may go more...like my EBF goal of 6 months!

@Weagle: Or at least until they get their learner's permit!
LO isn't here yet but I plan to RF at least until 2 but try for longer.

lol wellll Im gonna be the unpopular one here and tell you that we switched her to FF at about 10 months. She SCREAMED. BLOODY. MURDER. every second of every car trip. So hard she made herself sick often, and it was incredibly distracting to drive with the screaming. She wouldn't stop until we were out. Her pedi suggested trying to turn her to see if it stopped, and it did. So we went with the highest end Britax they make and went with it. It was becoming dangerous to drive with the screaming bc I was constantly trying to console her and would reach back or turn around.
We tried flipping her again once she got used to the car seat in general, but the same thing happened. I think it made her sick.

I'm going to do whatever I can to make it until 2. Like @erinpye, my LO (14 months old) is super tall and very, very unhappy with the rear-facing arrangement, but... it's just kind of the way it has to be

@LivsMama: Ours screamed in the car until nearly a year old, too. We got something called a Grip Daddy that holds an iPad on the back of the seat, and let her watch a Disney movie for longer car trips- worked pretty well!

We just switched at 27 mo.
We had a similar experience as @LivsMama:. I had to drive while DS held my arm tightly against his face in order to make him stop screaming. It got uncomfortable and was unsafe, but we made it past 2 years RF that way. He recently started protesting even getting into the seat, so when I took it out to clean it we made the decision to go FF.

@LivsMama: I've known a few parents that got the Foonf for their rf hating kids & it worked well for them (it sits higher so they can see out the windows). It's part of the reason we've chosen to get the Foonf too. Right now P doesn't protest, but that could change any time in the next 2.5 years. lol
Also the 2nd link I posted does talk about some remedies for those littles that get carsick.
For the moms with bebes that are big (high in the %) the 2nd link gives some great suggestions for carseats that will accommodate them AND talks about the scrunched leg issues! From what I've found leg injury is actually much more likely ff than rf (even when scrunched).

@erinpye: Oh my God, you just saved my life. We are going on a long car trip and this is exactly what we need.

@LivsMama: this is us much of the time! J has projectile vomit. Ugh!

We're still RF at 25 months and hope to be for awhile longer.

We will for as long as she can stand it. That's one of the reasons we went with the Clek Foonf . . . to get her up high so she can see out!

We switched my son at around 18 months and got so much slack for it from my DH's family. UGH. We plan on switching my DD at around 2 but if she absolutely hates it (like my son did), we'll switch her earlier.

My son is 27 months old and still rear facing. I plan to rf as long as he fits. He is also only 25 pounds and 35 inch tall. So on the smaller side.

My son is 30 months and it is time to switch him. He's outgrowing his seat in height. He never protested about rear facing.
We also have a Swedish convertible for when we travel to Europe, the weight and height limits are much different, but then again, so are the seats.

@Mrsjets: Same here! My 13 month old is not quite 20 lbs yet (although she is tall) so I think at least 2 is a good goal for us as well. And like you, we may go longer, just like our original goal of EBF for 6 months that has somehow turned into 13 months and counting.....

@sarac: @HabesBabe: That's what I was thinking! Technically P would've fit in her until after a year old, but I'm sure she's out grown it by now! If we had had the keyfit 30 though she *might* still fit.

@babyjmama: @livsmama: poor things! I get horribly carsick too. Have to sit in the front seat, backseat is torture, and never mind riding backwards (we had a station wagon growing up). Nothing helps me - I feel their pain!!
pineapple / 12526 posts
15 months, still RF, plan to keep it that way for a long time.
pomelo / 5093 posts
@HabesBabe: Yes, she is a tiny wisp of a thing. She'd still fit in it, if a bit scrunched length wise. She still only weighs 20 pounds, at almost two years.
