When did you switch to front facing?

M just turned one and meets the weight requirement of our convertible.
The car seat was out over the weekend so when my husband put it back in he front faced it.

I know rear facing is reco till 2 years but M HATES the seat and is SO MUCH happier front facing. She will shriek and cry the whole time while we're in the car when it was rear facing.

We're waiting till LO is 2. She's 21 months now and is doing fine in it. Even if she wasn't I would keep her there, I'm too paranoid that something would happen.

We're going to try and wait as long as possible. It's just something I'm paranoid about. My son hates the carseat and always has, so I think I'm just used to his screaming at this point.

@BananaPancakes: how?? M is a shrieking eel and it vibrates through the whole car. She cries till she has trouble breathing sometimes.

@regberadaisy: I give Tyler snacks the second he is in the carset, or his sippy cup, and that seems to appease him.

My son is almost 1, but not 20 lbs, so I won't have that choice for some time.

My son is rear facing at 28 months. He also front faces in my mother's car, to him there is no difference.

DS1 was 3 years 1 month. DS2 is 15 months and still rear facing. Hoping to make it to 3!

I also give LO a snack which seems to distract her.

I'm waiting until at least 2 years old to move her to forward facing. That video one of the bees posted a while back was pretty scary.

@regberadaisy: Have you tried a car mirror maybe that might calm her down?

@regberadaisy: 2 to 6 months was the worst. He literally started full blown scream crying every time we for in the car. Maybe he was carsick, but I think he just hates being confined. We honestly just avoided going anywhere. We still won't go anywhere that takes more than 1.5 hours. I've gotten really good at turning the radio up and rolling the windows down. And we listen to the hot dog song from Mickey Mouse Club a lot.

E is starting to complain in the carseat but we'll keep him rear facing until at least two, then re-evaluate. I anticipate there will be a time where he really hates it but I plan to tough it out. There will come a time where he'll just accept it as a fact of life. If I were in an accident and he got hurt forward facing I would be so upset I didn't follow the recommendation.

@BananaPancakes: kinda hard in NY winters to roll down windows.
Tried car mirros, puffs and sippy cups. She just throws them and keeps screaming. When she's on a roll nothing stops her.

@regberadaisy: Very true. Though freezing her out could be an option. Just kidding.

We will wait as long as possible, she isn't even one yet so it's not even an option but I just watched a video on front vs rear facing car seats in an accident and it was eye opening. Hopefully she can make it until she is at least two.

@regberadaisy: not sure of your stance on screen time, but our good friend's LO hated the car and every trip was a cry fest. The only solution they found (and they tried everything under the sun!) was to install a holder for their iPad and they let their LO watch a video while in the car. It's worked like a charm so perhaps worth a shot depending on the desperation level. Just an idea!

@yerpie110: haha yup, tried that as well during a unbearable scream fest once. She just threw my iPhone.

We went through some phases like this. She didn't take a paci so the only thing that would calm her was for me to reach around and touch her cheek. Now that he can coomunicate with us and know we are there it's much better.

@regberadaisy: @BananaPancakes: yup J is the same... has always hated the car. As a toddler he is a little better and often food does appease him BUT like others have said, I do value his ultimate safety over his happiness. He has never even been forward facing, he JUST hit 20 lbs anyway. Holding off as long as I can!
