LO is 7 months and still gets a middle of the night feed, I would like to start sleep training but I feel like weaning will be the hardest part. When did you wean from middle of the night feedings, was CIO involved?

I got really lucky and LO weaned herself from night feedings and started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks. I still woke up twice a night to pump!

We did it about that time and CIO was involved. The problem was, DD was that DD was only nursing for comfort in the middle of the night. She would wake 2-4x a night at that age, so I started letting her CIO the first time she woke up. I would feed her the next time (if it was a few hours later). Eventually she started going longer and longer without waking, unless she was sick, and she hardly wakes now.

We sleep trained just before 6 months, and were down to one or max two feedings at night (no night feedings until he had slept 6 hours). At 10 months he stopped waking up completely on his own.

DS is 21 months and we are in the process. It's his only nursing left. We co-sleep and don't CIO so if he won't go back to sleep on his own, either DH or I will get up with him and go eat a snack and read books until he goes back to sleep. This usually happens around 5 or 7 AM so it's not terrible. So far, he is doing it only some nights, most he goes back to sleep on his own.

@Bao: I know...I definitely don't think I'll get lucky with our next baby. I'm reading sleep books now!

DD stopped night feeding around 3.5 months. At 4 months we dropped her dream feed at 11 PM too. She still wakes up in the night for her paci, but not to eat...

Lo started sleeping 12 hours at 2 1/2 months, no sleep training. That's when she found her thumb..... that's all it took. We got lucky!

@mrsaudi: I know. I know I'm in for it next time around because this LO spoiled me and there's no way it'll happen twice.

We sleep-trained via CIO when LO was 3.5 months old but not to get her to sleep through the night. We sleep-trained to get her to put herself to sleep and to get her to sleep longer stretches (versus being rocked to sleep for only an hour at a time). From 6-8 months of age, she was still getting 2 night feeds and from 8-10 months, she naturally dropped one feed. Then from 10 months, she started sleeping through the night on her own.

Around 13 months we started trying to cut out the night feedings by either letting her cry or just go in but not pick her up.

She still gets up twice a night at 5.5 months. I am guessing she will self-wean at some point but we're not going to push it.

My LO did the same as @autumnlove: until around 5 months. Since then we get 1-2 nights a week where she doesn't wake, but most nights she wakes once. Our rule is that if she wakes less than 8 hours after going down (which is rare) she doesn't get to eat, but after 8 hours I will nurse her.

@London Mama: He woke up for his usual feeding but instead of giving him a bottle we offered him a pacifier and he went down on his own. Subsequently we started doing that when he woke up in the middle of the night and he didn't resist it. He didn't sleep through the night until we sleep trained at 6.5 months.

Ah, I see. DS is 5 months this week and wakes up a lot so I'm very interested in different solutions!

I think we did it around 9 months... we started by having DH go in there instead of me, so that breastfeeding just wasn't an option. (And we did it gradually... first we'd make him go 4 hours, then 5, then 6, etc. without offering a boob).
Sometimes LO would fuss, sometimes he wouldn't, and DH would do his best to get LO back to sleep but we'd let him fuss for a while too if he didn't seem TOO distraught.

We bottle feed, but haven't done CIO yet. He has started STTN more frequently so I'm just hoping he drops it on his own. I'll do CIO by 9 months if needed.
