I still put pieces of food on DD's highchair tray. When I give her a plate, I have to hold it down otherwise she will flip the plate over. When did your LO start eating from her own plate? And when did they start using their own utensils?

She doesn't eat from a plate. I use bowls with suction cups on the bottom. At 13/14 months she was using utensils. Very messy though.

DS is 15.5 months and we still don't use a plate. He just throws it across the room!

We started using plates from the beginning. I bought some heavy-ish ceramic-type plates (I'm not actually sure what they're made of?) from IKEA. He grabs it and slides it around from time to time, usually toward the end of the meal, and has broken one when I wasn't watching closely enough and he flung it on the floor. But, overall, he does pretty well! We still haven't started using utensils, though... Need to do this!

We just started using plastic plates for him a few weeks ago, he's 18 months now. He's been pretty good with not flipping them, usually he will flip the plate when he's almost done and starts to get bored. He would still rather use his hands to eat, but I'm trying to at least get him to eat yogurt and oatmeal on his own with a spoon. So freaking messy.

@dolphin: nope. He is really good about utensils and plates, always has been. The food is his issue, lol (it is always something!).

Miss A is 14.5 months and we just started using a plate in December and we've also just started giving her utensils to practice with at meal times. It's still messy but she's getting better everyday!!

His daycare has been giving him plates/bowls/utensils from about 8 months or so. He's 15 months now & we're transitioning from high chair to table & plates.
Have you tried letting her play with plates during non-mealtimes? Maybe she just needs to experiment and get it out of her system?

I need to start doing this (LO is 14.5 months old), but I'm sure he'll pick up the plate and start playing with it. We were out to brunch with our friends' much more docile baby the same age, and they were able to put a side plate with food on the table in front of their baby, and he just picked up the food from the plate and ate it. Can't wait for that to work for us.

Consistently around 14 months. Even at 19 months he will sometimes toss the plate

We have just started using a plate and utensils in the last few weeks, so maybe around 14 months? He is actually really good with a fork. He doesn't play with the plate as long as he's actually hungry. Once he gets bored, he will try to throw it over.

I was just about to ask this same question! DS is almost 14 months and we're starting to use a plate or a bowl with a suction bottom. He tries so hard each time to pull them up. The suction isn't awesome so we really have to watch him or it all ends on the floor. Also, working on utensils and that's not going well. But he'll learn. Anyone have any recommendation on plates/bowls where the suction cup actually gets it to stay put?

@MUI831: this is the only toddler plate we have and I love it.

@locavore_mama: I was just looking at this one on Amazon! You have convinced me to get it.

Yikes...LO is 15 months and still has zero interest in using utensils except to hold and take food off of with his fingers to put into his mouth! He does ok with a plate, but it will almost always end up on his face and head.
