At 2, we switched from crib to a twin bed. I think she was fine the first day because she was so excited about her big girl bed. On the second day, the novelty had already worn off and she wouldn't stay in bed so I did the same as Chopsuey -- locked the door! She went to sleep and has ever since. We only locked it that one day. We also have a video monitor.

We did it at 22-months from crib to twin bed. I wrote a post about our experience -it's somewhere around here! We also locked the door for the first 3 nights and after that she got it and we didn't need to anymore.

@Sweet T: I don't think a pillow is necessary. My DD still doesn't use her pillows!

We are starting work on her big girl room but I was Wally hoping to make it with the crib until at least her second birthday!

@Sweet T: we just switched the inside knob with the outside knob! It's funny bc she knows we don't lock for naps so she'll let herself out after she wakes from one. At night she assumes it's locked and calls out for me from the opening under the door.

She's been sleeping with a pillow for close to a year now. She still moves around a lot so the pillow isn't used all night, but she likes having it on her bed.

We transitioned at 20 months and were really surprised how few times C has gotten out of bed. In the beginning we would tell him when we put him down that he is not to get out of bed without us and that he needs to call for us to come get him. We always shut his door but don't lock it and we too do not have a video monitor. There have been two nights where we had to hold the door closed until he gave up and put himself back in bed but that was actually a few months into the change and he just didn't want to go to bed at all. He has gotten to where he asks us to sit next to him when we put him down so one of us does for about 2 minutes and then we get up and leave regardless of if he is asleep or not and he accepts that. There has only been two nights that he had gotten out of bed and come to find us in the middle of the night. It's actually been a very smooth transition for us.

Just recently transitioned DD to a toddler bed at 25 months because she was constantly climbing out of her crib. She would routinely open the door and walk out of the room so we had to lock her in. Now she falls asleep on the floor in front of the door every night and we have to put her in the bed afterwards. Hopefully she will learn to fall asleep in bed soon because its heartbreaking to find her on the floor.

We transitioned at 16 months bc she started climbing out of her crib even with the mattress all the way on the floor. We skipped the toddler bed and went straight to a queen (took it from the guest room) and it was NOT a smooth process...
