@Mamaof2: It does seem short, but it's actually a great system here. Essentially, schools have six weeks on, one week off (half term break), six weeks on, two weeks off (term break), and then repeat two more times until the six week summer break. It works brilliantly as you never have a long stretch in school without any breaks coming up. And of course, as a former educator, I am a big fan of anything that limits the amount of knowledge lost during lengthy breaks from school!

@Ree723: yes but if both parents work what do you do with the kids with all those breaks? Is there a camp at the school or something? That's my concern - If I was a SAHM I would love year round school!

@Mamaof2: There are loads of provisions for kids during school breaks. All of the schools in a council (similar to a county or city in the US) operate on the same school calendar and there are then council wide care provisions for quite a reasonable rate, usually run by schools, churches, independent organisations, and/or more specialist camps etc. It's nice as everyone operates on the same schedule so you're really never without an option for care if you're a two parent working family.

Some went back in early July. The rest go back sporadically between then and late August.
