I guess this is a good problem to have, but we get so many hand me downs from people with older kids! I feel bad saying no, because it's so wasteful to get brand new clothes when kids outgrow them in months... but I also feel sad because it looks like I won't get to pick out any clothes for the kids for a long time. If people pass their clothes to you, what age does it stop? Or at least slow down?

We didn't get too many hand me downs past size 24 mo/2T. The kids stay in toddler sizes a lot longer so clothes tend to get destroyed.

I think I've bought only 10 or so outfits for dd since she was born and she's 13 months. In general people have stopped giving us clothes. Although my mil basically bought everything I'll need for her next size for Christmas and her birthday. It's a little annoying in a way, but not a bad problem to have.

LO is almost 10 months and it has slowed down a fair bit, but I feel like we are just about always going to get new clothes from the grandmas and hand-me-downs from our friend who has a daughter 5 months older than DD. Well, I guess that has to eventually slow down since they'll be in the same size clothes once they are a couple years old I guess.

I can only answer from the giver's side, as we didn't get any hand me downs past the initial newborn stage and not much then either.
I still send a box every so often to my younger cousin and the last box I sent was up to 2t sizes. However, as dd spent more and more time in each size she wore down more so more got donated or tossed, and I started keeping only the nicer stuff (which was still a lot) for cousin. I ALWAYS send a note telling her to absolutely feel free to donate, toss, give away, or even sell (I've sent a couple $100 janie and jack dresses! one xmas one not) what isn't her style, and I hope she never keeps things out of guilt!

Also, I get the whole thing about wanting to pick out clothes because although we don't get hand me downs my mom buys A LOT! I just buy what I want anyway, though I usually buy less.

We were given a bunch of new clothes up to 18 months and then misc hand me downs for 2t and 3t. I'd love to pick out everything myself, but have me downs also save us a lot of money. The stuff I can't stand, I pass on and then fill in his wardrobe with stuff I like. It balances out. I've also found that sometimes the clothes others buy grow on me.

I would say once you get to bigger sizes. Toddlers destroy clothes.

Toddlers really start to destroy clothes for sure. We had a niece who had a lot of nice things into size 4T or so that we received (they buy a ton of clothes). I think now that we are in 5/6 stuff we really have to buy a good chunk of it.

I still get hand me downs for my 7 yr old - he is pretty picky though now so I use maybe 1/4 of it, donate the rest and then buy new.

DS quit getting me hand me downs at 12-18 months.
My BFF's lil boy is 1 year younger than DS so she'll be getting his hand me downs until this year which is 2T since her boy is big and mine's small so they'll be wearing the same size soon!

It has slowed down around size 3 for us. I think a lot of things are worn longer and get destroyed before they grow out of them. I have found it makes me incredibly happy to pick out 2-3 outfits I love for each size if we have a lot of hand me downs. I splurge a little more than I would if I had to do a full wardrobe but it's easier to justify. I also usually need to add a couple of plain leggings and plain tees to mix in for the things without a match.

We still get a ton from our neighbor who is 2 years older, but only one size up.

I have to admit though, I don't have much spare time these days so I'm so very grateful that I don't need to run around looking for clothes after work!

We didn't get hand me downs after about 12 months. Now I'm saving clothes for LO2, I've noticed that I have much, much less in my boxes after the 18 month size because the clothes are more likely to get trashed than grown out of!

Age 2, I'd say? Then things just look SUPER worn and beat up. I really can't buy E much used stuff anymore--swimsuits, jackets, etc, I do. But not so much leggings and t-shirts. And i know for E, i buy her less stuff that I know she will wear and WANT to wear, so it gets more wear in general, because it's in more frequent rotation
