I'm bumping this! LO has her first fever (9.5 months). It started last night and goes away with Motrin but at the end of the 6-8 hours it comes back. I'm probably going to call the doctor's 24 soon, but I wanted to know if I'm just being a worry wart.

My doctor says 101.4 call the office right away. He said if it ever happens in the middle of the night to try Baby Tylenol to see if that helps. If it doesn't go down with Baby Tylenol to go to the hospital.

@mrslace: Yeah, our doctor wants me to bring her in tomorrow. Her fever is 101, I just wish it would stay away.

At this age, 9+ months, It would have to be 103 without improvement from tylenol/other methods or 102+ for multiple days.
I use this "fever" write up from Seattle Children's Hospital. Fevers below 102 we don't even medicate unless it's clear that P or G is uncomfortable. Generally speaking, as long as the child is over 3 months, a fever from 100-102 is a good sign of the immune system doing it's job and nothing to worry about.

@runsyellowlites: Well that makes me feel a little better. When the fever started she was acting normally but she's been super cranky and clingy all afternoon

@mrsjazz: I seriously loved when I found that site! Made me feel so much better.
This past week P ended up with a pretty high fever and was clearly not feeling well (got to 102.8 and 2 doses of Tylenol 2 hours apart to bring it down). It made me pretty nervous when it didn't want to come down. The only reason I didn't take her in is b/c I knew I was doing everything they would at the hospital (it was late already) and there she'd also get an IV and everything else. So I just made sure she nursed/snacked often and did what I could to bring it down. It finally broke and then returned to 101.8 about midmorning. She got cranky again so I dosed her and gave her a bath (she loved taking the bath even with the high temp) and then she was fine after that. Once it broke about 5 in the evening it didn't come back.
We all kind of had a weird 24 hour virus that did that the week before so I guess that's what she had.
Hope your lo starts to feel better soon! I hated seeing P sick.... on top of the fever stuff she also reacted to the wheat she had been having so it was NOT her best week at all. =(

What @runsyellowlites: said! Unless he is uncomfortable or it's 103, we don't automatically give meds, we try to let the body do its thing.

She's only had two fevers, which is amazing for her being so sick all the time. One time was when she had pneumonia and the other was when she had an ear infection + 5 teeth cutting. Both tines, the fever was under 102 but I still took her in.

So annoying, LO has at least 5 fevers so far (he's 1) including the one he is on right now. This one is by far the longest. (Started on sunday afternoon and today is the 5th day)
It was 102.5 on Sunday, I gave him tylernol it went down a bit. Monday it was still between 102-103... I gave him tylenol until we go in to see the doc to make sure it is not ear infection or anything funky. I did call them Monday morning though but they actually said I didn't have to come in because it could be shot-related (he just had his 1-year shots last Friday). Now it is down to 100.4 this morning when I took his temperature. I will go in tomorrow if the fever doesn't completely go away.
Then 2 weeks ago when he did have an ear infection related fever, I measured him in the middle of the night it was 103+! I freaked out and called, and the nurse said give him tylenol, and I didn't have to take him to the ER as long as he is under 105. I went into the doc the next day.
I used to freak out about these things but since he had so many fevers and sickness, I am now able to remain (mostly) calm and just deal with it.

When it goes above 101 I call and ask to see the doctor because above 101 it's no longer teething related.

@mrslace: @runsyellowlites: So LO's fever broke this morning after a night of her waking up every 1.5 hours crying--the Motrin didn't do anything
poor baby. I am trying to figure out if I should still bring her in, her temp. is back to normal but she is still super duper fussy and we're expecting a winter storm tomorrow. I may just take her this afternoon to ease my nerves!

@mrsjazz: I would probably take her in. I know there was a time when I erred on the side of caution with DS b/c he broke out in a weird rash and it was a Friday. Figured it was better to make it into the doctor & it be nothing then it be something & have to go to the ER over the weekend. With a storm coming where I know I wouldn't want to go out, I'd just go in. No harm in going just in case. Then if your pedi wants to give a script you could fill it and just wait & see if lo actually needs it.

We took LO to the doctors when his fever hit 104 and was acting "out of it". We were immediately swarmed by the doctor and her team of nurses taking his temperature and blood pressure. The doctor said she wanted to rule out meningitis because the fever appeared abruptly. No meningitis just a double ear infection. 2 shots of antibiotics in the thighs and he was himself again!

Our LO had a fever and they just had us watch him. I think it depends on how old your LO is and what other symptoms they have.
