So I've been researching some local newborn photogs (thanks to all who gave me recs!) and was wondering when you took/plan on taking your newborn photos.
Most NB photos I've seen, the baby has already lost the umbilical stump. Was that a coincidence, or do people plan for that? Do you usually take pictures of the baby when s/he is brand new (ASAP-- stump may be visible), or do you wait a couple of weeks for the stump to fall off and have some sort of routine down?

My photographer said that they aim for 10 days old. That gives you some time to settle in, but the baby is still new and usually doesn't have things like baby acne yet. LO still had her stump.

I forget, but I think there's an ideal window for newborn photos. Especially if you want your LO to prop his/her head on their hands and do lots of other cute poses.
When I looked into it, the photographer said something about 10-14 days. I can't remember for sure though.

This sounds right along with what I've heard. I had one friend wait until the baby was about 4 wks old and the baby had already lost that 'newborn' look adn was a little more difficult to keep happy during the shoot.

i'm actually a newborn photographer, so i think i can give a little input! i always do newborn portraits before the baby is 14 days old. my ideal window is 7-10 days old. often, after two weeks the baby is two alert and wiggly to get the sweet poses the parents want.

I had ours done at day 12 and she still had her stump. We wanted to do them earlier but I got sick and had to postpone!

ps: the belly buttons are usually still a little icky, but we try to hide it as much as possible. also, photoshop works wonders for discoloration and general ickiness!
