I really wanted to invest in an ergo baby sport carrier for our baby due in april. as I look on the website I notice its says the age usage is from infancy up until about 4 or 5 months. That really seems like a very short life span for a baby carrier.
I always thought most carriers could be used until the baby starts walking? i guess I was wrong. At what point did your baby no longer fit into the carrier?

really? I thought ergo's last until at least 24 months, but I'm not familiar with the Sport version. We used our Ergo with my eldest til about 14 months. After that she just preferred to walk everywhere. If we had mastered the back carry maybe she would've stayed in it longer though, but it was spring when she learned to walk and we just let her roam a lot!

I dont know if I'm reading it wrong on the website but it has the same weght restrictions for all the different types of ergo carriers it says
"•Usage Range: Carries babies from infancy (7 lbs. / 3.2 g to 12 lbs. / 5.5 g with Infant Insert) or up to 4-5 months to maximum 45lbs / 20kgs " -

I was reading it wrong. 4-5 months is the minimum without the infant insert -
I have an ergo performance and I put my LO in it when she was 4 months and my friends daughter who was about 20 months and was able to carry both without feeling a major weight difference.

We have the Ergo sport and I'll probably stop using it front facing when he's around 10 months and using it on my back. We did buy a Kelty kid carrier for longer hikes/walks and travel. It has more structure but it's larger (and doesn't obviously squish down) and will work for a lot longer.

I would really like to meet that 5 month old, 45 lb baby.We've seen friends abandon their Ergos when their kids were between the ages of about 2.5 and 4, depending on the size of the kid and the size/comfort of the parent.
We currently love it for our 10 month old.
We also have a separate hiking carrier that we bought used, and that's nice since it allows LO to see more of what's going on, is easier on my/DH's back, and isn't as hot as having a baby pressed against you. -
@Mrsbells: I have an ergo and we still use it at almost 11 months old. LO's 30 inches long and about 21 lbs. It's still roomy and I'm guessing we have at least another year of use.

Thanks everyone I was having a dumb moment and misunderstood the age/weight guidelines.
I dont think ergos allow you to face out. But they can be worn front, side or back with the baby facing in. I plan to use it primarily on my back like a backpack. -
@Mrsbells: You cannot face out with an Ergo. I read somewhere on their site that the product is designed this way in order to prevent over stimulation. If the baby was allowed to face out like in the Bjorn they have no place to "hide" when overstimulated. With the Ergo they can tuck their heads into your chest at any moment. DS used to do this a lot and only then did that feature begin to make sense to me. It's also great because you can breastfeed easily with the Ergo as well! I didn't think it was possible but it is.
I LOVE my Ergo. DS is 23+ lbs and I can still comfortably use the Ergo with him with plenty of room to grow. Best baby carrier investment, IMO.
Pre-Ergo we had a Sleepy Wrap (like the Moby) DS outgrew this quickly and I did not feel safe using it past ~14 lbs. I also have a woven wrap, which is used similarly to the Moby, but can go up until toddler hood. From what I understand a woven does not have a true weight limit, but rather what you can handle. They also more evenly distribute the weight and can be used in a variety of ways making them more versatile.

Our baby is 13 months and definitely has a way to go in the Ergo. I keep telling my husband she is way too big for the Bjorn but she/he just loves it. I don't know when is when for that.
