My middle child has been totally potty trained since 20 months. We put a pull up on her after bathtime at night, mainly due to my laziness in nighttime potty training her. I think my oldest was fully night and day PT'ed by 3. She'll be 4 next year and I'm worried she'll never be nighttime trained. I can't get her to not wake up with a totally soaked pull up!

My 3.5 year old still wakes up with a super wet diaper every morning. I'm not worried. Most people I've talked to have said it's just a developmental thing and they will eventually wake up dry on their own.

B will be 4 in January and still wears pull-ups to bed. I'd say they're dry in the morning 80% of the time but until it gets much closer to 100% I'm going to stick with the pull ups. I'm not too worried about when it will happen.

Ah this makes me feel better. It’s just so crazy to me she goes potty before bed, no liquids after dinner, and still wakes up with a soaked pull-up!!

Mine just turned 4 and still wears a pull-up at night. She's been day trained for 1.5 years now! Honestly she goes weeks on end with a dry pull-up but as soon as we put her in undies, we get an accident within a few days. She doesn't want to switch and we're ok letting her take the lead for now. Hopefully she'll feel confident enough to switch sometime this year!

DD1 has been potty trained for almost 3 years. She turns 5 in January and still wakes up soaked every morning. She sleeps like a bear and DH had bed wetting issues so I'm not stressing. But dang are pull ups lame.

@matador84: our pediatrician told us two things need to happen. They need to secrete an enzyme that makes them produce less urine at night and they need to be developmentally ready (i.e. wake up and realize they need to use the bathroom). This happens at different ages for different kids. My son is 5.5 and still wakes up with a soaked pull up. Our pediatrician isn't concerned at all.

@KT326: Yes, this. You can’t really “train” for night time. They’re ready or they’re not.
My son is newly 3 and he was waking up dry every morning before he was potty trained at all. And I did nothing for that.
He’s been wearing underwear to bed and for naps for the last 3 weeks and hasn’t had an accident yet. I think for whatever reason he started secreting that enzyme early and he doesn’t even need to go at nght at all. He just wakes up and pees in the potty within 5 mins or so.
He has a daytime pee accident about once a week though! Each kid is different. I wouldn’t worry at all! -
I think my daughter was between 3.5 and 4- she was usually waking up dry in the pull up by then and she wanted to wear underwear to bed so we let her. She will have an accident every few weeks, and often wakes up to pee once overnight. But she seems to be quite early compared to her same age friends- most of them are still waking up in wet pull-ups.
I don’t know if it’s at all related but even as a baby she was never a heavy overnight wetter, to the point that we would wait an hour or so to change her diaper after she woke up.

DS was daytime trained by 2.5 and then night time training took another 6-8 months. When he was waking up for a while with dry pull ups, we put him in undies. He then had a period of time where he was constantly waking up having soaked the bed, so we went back to pull ups for a month or so and then he wanted to wear undies to bed. We gave treats in the morning for being dry.
One thing I noticed with DS is that there got to be a point where he knew he was wearing a pull up and would stay dry while he slept, and then wake up and pee in it. So he was physically capable of it, but too lazy.

My son was wearing a pull up until some point when he was 4. I was under the impression that until he woke up with a dry pull-up that he wouldn't be ready so I didn't push the issue. He came home from school one day and said that none of his friends wore pull-ups at night and he didn't want to either so we decided to let him try. He woke up dry that next morning and every morning since (it was a year ago). It turns out that he was capable of not peeing while he slept but he knew that he could so he just kept doing it. Honestly, this is one of those times when I highly recommend just waiting until they're ready and just skipping the guilt. It was a non-issue when we let our son tell us when he was ready.

DS was dry at night for a while before we were able to day train him. Once he was potty trained during the day he stayed dry at night. DD is 3 bad has been potty trained for over 3 months but we still used pull ups at night. She’s dry 90% of the time but I feel like she’s still young so I don’t mind keeping her in one for a bit. And she doesn’t care, so that helps.

@SweetiePie: Same for my son! He's not quite three yet, but he always wakes up dry as long as he pees right before bed. When my husband says "he won't pee!" (eye roll) he has an accident, even if he had gone an hour before bed. He doesnt even go right when he wakes up! It kind of freaks me out sometimes, being 8m pregnant, I will have peed like 6 times overnight/in the AM by the time he pees in the morning.

@matador84: My DS turns 4 in December, and just this week he suddenly started waking up dry in the mornings. Totally did it on his own and very proud of himself too. I read somewhere to not worry about it because it's something that doesn't even click in their brain until age 5 for a lot of kids!

For DS this took at least till he was 4. Maybe 4.5 even. DD is 2 and has been waking up dry for a while.
I've heard this is mostly involuntary. In my experience it seems to be connected to how well a child sleeps. DS sleeps like a log, and being soaking wet didn't use to wake him. DD is a horrible, horrible sleeper and will wake up if anything makes her the tiniest bit uncomfortable.

DS was potty trained right after he turned 2. He was night time trained around 32 months, but he still wore pull-ups at night until he was almost three. I wanted a solid couple of months with no nighttime pees before I got rid of the pull-ups.

My son was around 4 when he no longer wet himself at night but because I was working and didn't feel like dealing with a wet bed during the week, he wore pull-ups probably for another year or so.

He night trained immediately after day training at 2.5 but I don't think that is typical. Most of his friends still wear pull ups at night at 4.

For us it was the same as @travellingbee:
Both kids were dry at night pretty much within a month or two after being day trained. We kept LO2 in diapers a little longer because we had a long flight coming up. (The same thing actually happened for LO1 but within the first month of being potty trained) -
We *just* got out of pull ups overnight and she is 4.5.she was day potty trained at 2. I seriously had moments where I thought I’d be packing pull ups to college

Mine night trained long before she stopped having accidents during the day. Potty trained a few months after 3 and stayed dry at night by day two even with multiple day accidents. She’s 5 now and has had maybe 2-3 nights where she wet the bed and only when she was sick.

She was Day trained at 28 months and stopped pull-ups at night just before 4.

@birdofafeather: we are in a similar situation, but DD is 6. She stays dry if I bring her to the bathroom before I go to bed, around 11:00, but otherwise is always wet in the morning. I’m curious, do you or do you plan to do anything to actively “train” her, or do you just plan to wait it out, knowing it will take longer because of how deeply she sleeps and family history issues?

@Mrs Panda: I'm going to talk to her ped at her 5 year check in January. But currently, I'm not really doing anything. I encourage her to go if she wakes up and feels like it or go as soon as she wakes up but she hasn't really done either to much success. She's nap trained but when she's exhausted, she wets herself during nap. So I don't know how much help training would be at this point. I'm also expecting #3 in April and not really in the mood to be waking up when I don't have to! Maybe when 3 is here, I'll see how she does with a middle of the night wake up to pee. But she also is a beast when we have to wake her so there's that too!

@birdofafeather: gotcha. Mine is such a deep sleeper that she is completly unaware of me hauling her to the bathroom and sitting her on the toilet. She has no recollection of it in the morning. I certainly wouldn’t be able to carry her like that if I were pregnant!
DH’s mom said unltimately the thing that eventually worked to night train him were those bed pads that sound an alarm when they start to get wet, to wake the kid up. I’m so hesitant to go that route, though...it sounds kind of miserable to me, getting scared awake like that in the middle of a deep sleep. -
With the twins, they were potty trained just before turning three, but wore pull-ups for a few months afterwards at night. One night, Elliotsaid he wanted to wear underwear, so we let him and he was fine. We never pushed Finn & a couple months later he said he wanted to wear underwear so we did and it was fine. With Graham, we potty trained about a month ago at just over 2 1/2. He hates putting on a pull up at night (he already wears underwear during nap and is fine) & begs to wear underwear. I think we are going to have to let him try, but I’m more nervous about him. I’d say he stays dry maybe 90% of the time, but I really don’t want to change all the sheets, pajamas, etc. one out of ten nights!
Not sure if it’s true or not, but our kids have seemed to just sort of know when they were ready.

DS1 is almost 5 and still wears a pull up. We've tried a lot of things and nothing works so we're just going to go with it and wait until he's ready. As others have stated above, you can't really train for it and he pediatrician isn't worried. DS2 never really has super wet diapers and never has so I'm guessing he'll be in undies before his big brother.

My 5 year old often wakes up with a fully loaded pull up. I was stressing out about it to his doctor at his annual exam and was told that there's really nothing we can do about it and it's normal up until 7 or so. We have tried getting him up to pee when we go to bed but it's often already wet at that point. My 3 year old is dry in the morning more consistently than my 5 year old and we never try anything with him because if we wake him up to go he sleeps like crap the rest of the night.

My son was day trained at 2.5, nap trained shortly after, but it now 4y4m and still wears a diaper to bed. He's never (ever!) woken up dry so I don't think he's anywhere close to ditching the diapers at this point. He does take water to bed (and drinks a lot overnight!) so I think I will cut back on that to see if it makes a difference but I'm not too worried about it!

14 months. Long before he was day trained. And the kid (still) nurses all night. He has a bladder of steel! To be clear, I did absolutely nothing to encourage this other than having a routine where we potty before bath and immediately after we wake up. He uses the potty to read and loves it, this was totally not me rushing my kid.

DS was potty trained around 2-1/2 (32 months). He did pretty well at not wetting his pull ups overnight, so when we ran out last month that was it, and he's had zero accidents. He was fully night trained at 34 months.
Lucky for us that was all on his own, I wouldn't even know where to start with training that. We have friends with kindergartners who still have nightly accidents because they are such deep sleepers.
