My daughter is 5.5 months old and well into the phase of "everything I can get my hands on goes DIRECTLY in my mouth". She's not teething, just exploring her world via her mouth. I know this is totally normal, just wondering at what age it stops. It terrifies me to think about the number of germs she's putting in her mouth. Her day care is really great about keeping the toys clean and all the babies get their hands washed every time they get their diaper changed (at least every two hours) and we try our best to keep things clean at home too... but you can only do so much!

Mine is 9 months and does this all.the.time. He seems to have no interest in toys except how quickly he can shove them in his mouth. Or books. Or my shoes. Or anything.

I don't worry too much about germs...I figure it's good for his immune system
he also puts EVERYTHING in his mouth, just like M.

My son went through phases on putting things in his mouth. It's pretty much stopped now, but I would say it peaked around 8 months of age and tapered off from that point.

In guessin like 3? I hate how everything goes in but I figure, they are little explorers! As long as its not a choking hazard. It usually isn't. It's like, his bear or his blankie or his feet.

I don't know because my LO still does it--and even more so now. She will just sit on the floor and pick up random crumbs, lint, and dirt (stuff I can't even see sometimes) and just crams it in her mouth without even looking at it!

My LO stopped putting toys in his mouth a few months after he turned one. He became less interested in gnawing at everything and more interested in playing.

I was just asking myself this very question, and from the responses, looks like it will be awhile more until he stops! DS is 9 months, and I don't see him stopping any time soon, though one can hope though, right?

You know, my guy will still 'test' things with his mouth even though he's 15 months old!

We're 11 months here and still strong in the "let me have a little lick of that (everything)" stage.....

My son mostly stopped about 9 months old. Occasionally stuff goes in his mouth if he is teething or he thinks it is food. Once we tell him no, he stops and he is 2 now. His best friend is almost 3 and EVERYTHING still goes in her mouth.

We're at a year and still going strong. He walks around with shoes in his mouth like a dog fairly regularly.

I think DS mostly stopped around 18 months. At 2 now he does it with his play food only and we have to remind him to pretend.

Oy we're right there with you. I think it's adorable but have tried to steer him away from my fingers since I know teeth will pop up soon. I get lots of "gosh he must be hungry!!" from the inlaws (he is 18 lbs. not worried about his caloric intake).

We're in the thick of it at 8 months old. When I feed him in the morning, my iPhone 5 looks especially tasty. It's both funny and a bit of a headache having to make sure that he doesn't stick everything in his mouth.

3 and still puts things in her mouth. They regress a bit when baby siblings come along!

My 19 month old does it less now. So, only most of the time. Dirt and germs are great for their immune system!

DS continued until 2, stopped, started again after his sister was born (at 3) but maybe for a month or two.

DD is almost 1 and everything still goes straight into her mouth.

Hi Ladies. Newborns through 3-year-olds are in the Sensorimotor Stage of Cognitive Development. Even though it's not easy to watch, particularly when it seems as though they understand when being told not to put something in their mouths, it is honestly their way of learning about their surroundings and is 100% normal. Some children have a very hard time growing out of the stage, some grown out of it early and some never do. All in all, it's all good!

Same as everyone else - LO is 10.5 months and absolutely everything goes in her mouth! Apparently it's not really related to teething but more of an exploring, learning about different objects kind of thing. Regardless, I have stopped worrying so much about the germs and just figure it's all boosting her immune system!

Mine is 10.5 months and everything still goes in his mouth. His latest obsession? My flip flops. Ew. Germs are good for him.
