When you left the hospital, did you take advantage of the wheelchair they offer you?

    I wasn't offered one.

During my first birth I showed up at 5 am for a scheduled induction after stalled labor and had to WALK up to the third floor. There had been a false fire alarm and there was some lag required before the elevators would restart!

I wasn't offered one but we did get a cart for our stuff. It surprised me only b/c I thought that was every hospital's policy.

It was a requirement and it took 30-45 minutes for the wheelchair to get there, even though there were volunteers sitting around. Something about a workflow...

I don't remember if it was an option or required. But I was happy to use it. I had a c-section and had barely walked more than a few steps for 3 or 4 days while I was there. It was a long-ish walk to the entryway where the car was so I didn't even consider insisting that I walk.

I didn't get offered one either time!

Required; can't leave walking although I was definitely able to.

I forgot about that! I think they just told me to so I did. I had been walking all around the maternity ward during my stay though!

@PinkElephant: yesterday at my OB appointment they were fixing one elevator and somehow either turned the second one off or it went down while the elevator people were out to lunch, so we walked down, no biggie for us.. But there was someone on the fourth floor with a wheelchair and someone else on the second on a gurney. (This was just an office building.)

I didn't have a choice. She had to be strapped in the car seat as well in order to leave.

I HAD to be wheeled to LD and out it was a requirement at my hospital

I was wheeled out with the baby. They offered to put her in the carseat but I wanted to hold her. Got all the smiles that you see on TV. Hehe.

It was required. I told them I could walk out but they insisted. So I was wheeled out. Felt kinda weird.

@FaithFertility: did they meet you at the hospital entrance when you arrived?

I was offered one, but declined!

I had to get in a wheelchair when I arrived in labor, but wasn't offered one leaving. We had to strap DD into the car seat and the nurse helped us carry our things to the car, made sure the seat was clicked into the base, and then we could go.

Wow! I had no idea this was a requirement at some places! I never knew it was an option.

Our hospital's only requirement was a car seat for the baby.

Yep we were required to! Liability issue!

@FaithFertility: Wow, I would have refused. I couldn't sit in active labor. I just can't believe they would require that.

They didn't offer a wheelchair and I was fine. Just walked slow.

I was wheeled out. Am I the only one who had trouble walking after delivery?? I was so sore all over and just had no strength.

I was wheeled in too. I didn't want to be, but the hospital entrance was really far from the L&D ward. I think I had them stop during contractions though.

They didn't offer a wheelchair but I wouldn't have wanted one.

It was required at our hospital. I had just walked down 13 flights of stairs and they made a big deal about putting me in a wheelchair just to be wheeled out the front door...a little ironic!

It was required, and I couldn't hold the baby while they were wheeling me. I guess if they hit a bump I could have dropped him?

I wasn't offered one and didn't need it even though I'd had a cesarean. In fact, the nurses were bugging me to walk around the hospital ASAP.

As a lawyer, I don't understand the liability excuse for this policy. Won't the hospital be just as liable for an injury just outside the door? Especially if it looks like they thought you weren't capable of walking safely but discharged you anyway?

    ETA:
I actually walked to the hospital for my induction, so it would have been extra ridiculous if they wheeled me to l & d from the front door.

It's required at the hospital I delievered at and the one I work at. I thought this was a requirement everywhere for every inpatient discharge, but I guess not?! I would have rather walked because my tailbone hurt so bad!

I had to be wheeled out.

It was a requirement for me as well, and I had been there 5 days. I definitely took advantage of it.

Its required at mine but Im claustrophobic and cant ride the elevator so once we got to the stairs I walked.

Not offered. I specifically had it in my birth plan that I would decline it, though. I wouldn't put up with being treated like a sick person just because I'd had a baby.

Wheelchair but I wasn't offered. I think it might have been required. I had no complaints!

I didn't have a choice, but it was fine by me since it was a really long walk to where the car was waiting for me.

Our hospital required I be wheeled out. I refused a wheelchair going into the hospital though. My husband said I was being my stubborn self b/c I was having major contractions

I don't think I saw a wheelchair the whole time I was there. They were very big on getting me to walk all over the place and I'm glad they did. I think it sped up my c/s recovery.

It was a requirement. I had a csection so I don't know if vaginal birth is different? I didn't mind one bit though!

I didn't need one on discharge, and it wasn't forced on me. I think the policy in most hospitals in Canada is needs-based rather than liability-based. I did get wheeled from the entrance to the birth centre (by DH, at my request) bc my contractions were coming so close, and I was in a lot of pain. Once I was admitted, they had me walk to my L&D room, but it was a very short walk, and I still had to stop along the way.

I don't remember it being offered either time....but I probably wouldn't have used one even if they had asked.

It was required. I had a c/s so it helped. I had to leave LO for an extra day bc of jaundice issues and when I came back the next day, I walked in and walked out even though I was in similar pain. I think I walked out with my husband supporting me and the nurse held LO in the car seat.
