I usually stay by the pump, but if it is suuuuper cold I'll go sit in my car

I stay by the pump. I worry that the trigger won't automatically turn off and gas will spew everywhere.

Just like @littleredhairedgrl, in Oregon we don't pump our own gas

I stay by the pump.
@Dandelion: That happened to me...I was in the store buying something. Came out and it was everywhere, I think it was close to $100 worth of gas. Lesson learned.

I stay by the pump. I feel like sitting in my car would be more work for the short amount of time it takes to pump gas than just standing there is...

@sorrycharlie: There is a little thingymabob that will 'stick' the pump open/on, so it will pump itself. It should click itself off once it reaches the sensor in the gas pump that says it's full.

Always stay by the pump. Our pumps even say on the thing, never to get back in your car!

@MrsBrewer: A while back, there was that warning that said static electricity could build up when you enter and exit your car and might cause an explosion or fire, if you don't discharge the static (touch something metal) before touching the pump. It might be the reason why I stay by the pump. Though, my sister who used to work for a gas company said that it's okay to sit in your car.
Found a link that explains a bunch of gas myths. http://www.nacsonline.com/Research/FactSheets/Motor%20Fuels/Pages/GasolineMythsFacts.aspx

I usually stay by the pump except during the dead of winter. But I get out before it's reached the limit.

In MA It is illegal to hold the pump in an on position, so I always stand there and hold it or else I won't get any gas in the car!

I stay by the pump. My dad said it was illegal to get back in the car, but I don't know if that's actually true!

I stay because I heard about the static electricity thing (dunno if it is really true though).

@Dandelion: I have seen that happen!
I have never sat in my car when I am putting gas in it.

@twodoghouse: My husband says it's illegal to get back into the car, too.

It seems like around here they took away all of the little metal pieces on the pumps that allows the gas to flow without holding the handle, so I'm stuck holding the damn thing the whole time. Boo.

@bluestriped bee: They did that electricity test on Myth Busters once, and actually got a car to blow up. After seeing that, I will never ever sit in my car at the pump!

There've been a few instances of particularly nasty weather where I've gotten back in the car. But, generally, I stay at the pump.

I stand by the pump, but if it's cold I get back in! I keep an eye on how much is going in, so I would know immediately if it started spewing everywhere.

In Ontario they got rid of the things that allow you to pump gas without actually holding the handle a number of years ago. So you have to stand outside and pump.
honeydew / 7586 posts
I usually stand at the pump unless it is really cold. If I get in the car I always touch something to discharge any static electricity before I touch the pump.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
usually I have the kids with me, so I'll get back in the car.
If they're not with me, I stay outside.
honeydew / 7488 posts
Very few of our pumps have the little stick to prop the pump on so I stay!
pomelo / 5678 posts
Never in my life have I seen anyone get in the car. It needs to be monitored.

@bluestriped bee: @photojane: never heard of that! wow! What if you're wearing gloves - could it still happen?
I get back in the car on cold days - I mean seriously - it is in the negatives for the entire month of January in Minnesota!
