...how do you honor bed time?
If you do, how old is your little one?
Last night we went to a friend's housewarming party and it started at 7:00 p.m., but that is the time we usually put LO down. There is no way we could have honored her bed time...so I just held her the whole time and hoped she would sleep in my arms.
She is 8 weeks.

Did she sleep?
My LO is just over 4 months and he sleeps terribly on-the-go. He would not sleep in my arms if I paid him to!
We have pushed bedtime an hour at the most or we have tried for a later nap to get him to a later bedtime. The last options would be getting a sitter or just forgo the outing if it wasn't super important to us.

@Sammyfab: nope, not one bit! And she was so overstimulated when we get home she didn't sleep until 11:00 at night.

@Mrsdaredevil: awwww...I'm sorry! I guess you'll know for next time. Our LO grew out of the sleepy newborn stage super early and we are definitely 'those parents' that take off early or decline plans because of LO's bedtime.

when olive was less than 3 months, she would sleep when we were out in the carrier or stroller. now she would never so we just don't go out, or friends come over to our place.
it wasn't until charlie turned 2 that we started pushing his bedtime when we go out (til 9:30 at the latest). before that we never put him to bed late.... ever! he was asleep by 7:30 every night.

I think it depends on each kid and what you are willing to put up with. My son never slept so it didn't matter if we were out or in. These days we bring the pack and play and try to put him down wherever we are at.

My lo is almost one. We try to get her home for bedtime, but there are exceptions. We just play it by ear, if she seems like a breakdown is coming we leave. But usually she can last longer if we're out and she's being entertained.

I would turn down any night invites. DD likes to sleep at home and the transfer thing never works so we don't push her bedtime back by much.

When we go out to dinner with the baby (only rarely), we try to get her to go to sleep in her carseat. It doesn't work as well as regular bedtime at home, but it works ok. Once we get home, we feed the baby, and put her to bed for real.

between 6 months and 18 months I was very strict with bedtimes. At that point her schedule was really important to keep her sleeping well. Little babies are just a mess (at least mine are) and as she got older we were able to push bedtimes a bit without a meltdown. We still try very hard to keep it pretty regular for her as she thrives on a regular routine.

No, we don't follow a set schedule, but at 6 months he naturally tends to fall asleep between 9-10. We went to 2 baseball games last week, and he just fell asleep with me holding him.
