I'm never sure which way will make them cleaner. Maybe having the top of the spoons/forks facing up helps the dishwasher clean them?
Which way do you point your forks and spoons when running the dishwasher?

Up! When I put them face down they nestle and food gets stuck.

Down for forks and knives. Up for spoons. It drives me bonkers when people put sharp objects pointing up - so easy to poke an eye out or something!

@rahlyrah: me too! I'd rather wash them again if any food gets stuck on them.

@shopaholic: Knives shouldn't be in the dishwasher, I think? Interesting on forks facing down for safety reasons!

Up, but I still make sure not to touch them by that part when I take them out. I guess it would depend what kind of basket you have in there; ours is not on the door and it's pretty wide.

Forks and spoons up, butter knives down, and I wash all other knives by hand. The basket opens on the side so I never have to touch the part you eat off of when I put them away.

All up- forks spoons and the everyday knives. (I'm not going to hurt myself on any of them!) Only thing down are steak knives. I used to put them all down (to easily grab them) but chef husband changed my ways. Apparently that gets them cleaner.

Just however they land. Butter knives go in, but I wash all other knives by hand.

@mrbee: Only butter knives, non-sharp knives. Oh no - I've schooled DH that our nice knives NEVER go in the dishwasher!

Up. I don't put steak knives in the dishwasher, and otherwise they don't get clean enough for me. I'm the dishwasher unloader, so I don't have to worry about people touching the silverware except me. And I a,ways wash my hands first.

Down. I am a germophobe and prefer to grab them by the handles than the part we eat off of.

I always do it Martha's way- load the forks/spoons pointing both up and down. http://theradioblog.marthastewart.com/2010/02/dishwasher-101-tips.html

I load them down so its easy to unload and not touch anywhere but the handle!

Knives down but for everything else any way. I like about 50/50 so it's not crowded down or up. I don't want spoons on top of each other so it doesn't get clean.

@mrbee: OMG are our minds connected or something?!
I was thinking this last night and was going to start a thread but got distracted!! I used to put them head down, but I think putting them upright cleans them better...

Down! Otherwise when you empty it, your hands touch the clean ones.

Forks up, so the tines don't get caught in the basket. No real preference on spoons and butter knives. The good (sharp) knives are handwashed.

Down. When I started waitressing we had to watch a video that said when you load dishes and stuff, the silverware should all go in pointing down so that when you unload you don't touch the clean part you eat off of. (Like pp's have said.)

Up, otherwise they don't get clean. My hands are clean, so I'm not worried about touching the top part.

Down but I mix them all up so not all the spoons or forks are together to prevent them from "laying" on top of each other and not getting cleaned.

Up. Our dishwasher basket has an insert that goes in with slots so you put your silverware stem down in the slots. I always figured that's because that's how they're "supposed" to go.
