OMG - Olive slept through the night last night. 11 straight glorious hours out of the blue!!!!!!!!!! (knock on wood)
I actually woke up at 5:30 because I was so engorged, and got up to pump.
I can't wait to sleep through the night, but I can't help but think about all that wasted milk if I don't wake up to pump. But I'M.SO.TIRED.
What did you do when your baby started sleeping through the night?

I was already done breastfeeding then. But yay for Olive... and for you guys! Hope you get to sleep through the night too soon!

I would wake up to pump because I was engorged and couldn't sleep but I'd make sure not to empty my breasts and just pump enough to be comfortable. It took a few days and then I could sleep through the night without pumping. The longest though that I went between feedings that young was 8 hours, I'd feed her before I fell asleep.

DS's sleep patterns are still very unpredictable and I'm deathly afraid of supply issues, so I do pump around the clock if he sleeps. I usually try not to go more than 4-5 hours between feeding/pumping, so that does mean a 1a-2a pump session most nights.

The 2 times I forgot to wake up in the middle of the night to pump, I got mastitis!!! After that, I always set my alarm to wake up in the middle of the night, even when my LO slept through the night. I did this for a year! I was so happy once I hit 12 months and stopped pumping. Finally able to sleep all night long!

@banana: yikes! i've already had mastitis twice along with a couple clogged ducts, but that was in the first 2 months as i was establishing supply. i can understand why you pumped though. the things we do for our babies!

@mrs.bee: I was SO scared of getting it again that I decided not to risk it and to keep pumping away. My 2 bouts of mastitis actually happened around the 4th and 5th month so I knew it wasn't due to establishing milk supply. So I took NO chances on that one.

@banana: scary!!!!! i was considering not pumping because sleep oh glorious sleep! but wow mastitis in your 4th and 5th month. i can't go through that again!

@mrs.bee: I know!!! Aside from the most severe flu in my life (when I was 16), I had NEVER felt as sick as I did when I got full blown mastitis. It's horrible! I hope you never get mastitis again! (crossing fingers for you!)

When my baby sleeps through the night (rare), I wake up to pump. Sometimes 2-3 times!!!

I'm not breastfeeding anymore, but when I was, I got up twice a night to pump. My little guy started sleeping through the night at 2 months.

@Mrs. Bee: @banana: So sorry you ladies were so sick when you had mastitis! I had it once early on, and it wiped me out, but I just felt like I had a cold.
DS has been sleeping through the night for 2 weeks, and it just occurred to me that I could sleep too. I've been almost exclusively pumping, so I was waking up the whole time, and as his nighttime sleeping periods stretched out, I have been waking up more than he was. It is so exhausting to wake up to pump but I'm so afraid of another plugged duct (I've had 4) or mastitis or, worst of all, anything threatening my milk supply!

I'm still waiting for Little Jacks to sleep through the night! I was too lazy to get up and pump... but if I'd had an experience with mastitis, I bet that would have changed my mind!

I never did MOTN pumps, I pump 5-6x all during the day with the last pump between 1-2am and the next pump between 8-9am.

@j0s1e267: i pump 5-6 times/day too. 4-5 during the work day, and once after olive goes to sleep. i wish i could quit!

@mrsbee, olive latches on as well right? So you breastfeed her then pump? I am pretty much down to 5 pumps. So my schedule is approximately 8-9am, 2-3pm, 5-6pm, 8-9pm and 1-2am. 113 days and counting! For the record, I hate pumping!!

@j0s1e267: i nurse olive at night and she gets bottles in the day from our nanny. and then on weekends i breastfeed the entire time. come monday, she is always mad about taking the bottle again. i try to bottlefeed her over the weekend, but it's too much work to pump and bottle feed.
my pumping schedule is now 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 5:30pm, 9pm, maybe 12am.
and yes luckily olive has always latched on great!

@mrsbee, Olive is a champ! I so understand the gap from 5.30pm to 9pm! My oldest gets home from daycare at 6pm then it's bath, dinner, play & books before lights out then I can pump again!

On the sporadic nights my LO does wake now I still don't pump and will only feed off one side and then in the morning feed off the same side and pum the other. I usually get between 7-10oz off the one side in the morning.
I love my sleep!
