Wondering this too, our bathroom is close by, but maybe it should be in the same room to start?

the LOs I nanny kept the potty in the downstairs bathroom - it was right near the living room. so every hour or so I'd ask her if she had to go pee, and sometimes she'd try, sometimes she wouldn't.
it ended up that she didn't like the little potty anyway, so they bought one of those Dora seat covers for the big potty - and she used that. so in that case, it was in the bathroom. lol!

We just used over-the-toilet trainers (the one by Bjorn), so they're in the bathrooms. They hang on little hooks on the side of the toilet when not in use.

We have a standalone potty that we keep in the extended dining room/living room are, which is where Charlie spends most of his time!

Right now we have a standalone one in the bathroom and also an over-the-toilet trainer there. When we actually do potty training, I'll probably put the standalone one in her play room so she'll have easy access to it but once she is trained I will move it back to the bathroom.

When we potty trained DD, we kept the potty in the living room, since that's where we hang out the majority of the time. Once she got the hang of it, we moved the potty into the upstairs bathroom. Now that she's big enough to use a potty seat, the little potty is in DS's room, since we practice EC.
