Have you and DH talked about it? If so where do you see yourself settling....?
We go back and forth with FL, NC and somewhere out west maybe. DH keeps repeating AZ but I don’t see myself there in retirement.
It’s all about great weather(warm) for us!

I would love to have a home near my kids and a 2nd home in France. Now, if my kids happen to move to somewhere with mountains or lakes or a beach, that’d be perfect in my opinion. I’d like great food, beautiful scenery and good weather.

Don't move to Az unless you can also afford a summer home somewhere else. It's horrible here in the summer. This is the most temperate summer we've had since I moved here and we'll still have 90+ days over 100. The past 3 summers we've had 5-15 days over 120

Winters in AZ, summers in MI. Probably quick trip out to AZ in late fall and leisurely RV to MI in early spring.

Vermont or the Adirondacks, with another house somewhere warmer/more temperate. My husband is voting Tennessee for the warmer/more temperate because of the reasonable taxes—literally never been there but if I get my house in the forest I’m happy!

If I could swing it, I'd spend summers in Vancouver, BC or LA or NYC or just anywhere else but this stifling heat. But besides that I love it here.

A lake house has been on our mid to long term plan for a while. My family has been going to one specific lake in the Adirondacks for five generations, but we can’t decide if we’d rather it be a seasonal there or potentially a year round property on a lake where we live now in VT, since total carrying costs would be similar. With winters as we get older either somewhere more temperate, but still in the mountains, or in a condo where we don’t have to worry about shoveling snow/can get what we need delivered. I guess it also depends where our kid(s) end up, I wouldn’t want to be too far from grand babies.

@Sams Mom: Alaska is amazing, but the summer is so short. Come to the ADKs, you’ll get 80s regularly, but it never hits 90. And when it’s 85 you can just jump in a lake.

I’m in Canada. Somewhere by the sea would be nice, although I wouldn’t like to deal with all the extra snow...i’d like somewhere near my babies, but who know if they’ll stick around, and somewhere that doesn’t get very warm because the sun and heat are two things I don’t enjoy.

Realistically, probably Florida. But my dream is Hawaii, I just know it doesn’t make much sense (proximity to family, cost of living, etc).

Out of California! Who knows where we will want to go when the time comes, but we like AZ and ID. Love Colorado, but it seems to be turning into California!

I would LOVE to move back to Hawaii. I have lived there 2x already and it is a place that resonates with my heart and all the things I enjoy doing. Unfortunately, a Ditty move which is not funded by the military would make for a pricey move and the COL out there is astronomical. If I had to stay where I am [in our home on a lake] in our quiet, private neighborhood, I could happily deal with it, too. I suppose that I just need to live by a body of water wherever I end up in 20 years.

I am super lame but I just want to be where my kids are (hopefully they are not all spread apart)!
Also, pessimistically, I feel like I'll never retire...

I think I'd like to retire right where we are, but buy a really nice camper and travel the U.S. That way we could spend a month or so in some place totally different every year. I loved the mountains in Colorado, but also love the beaches in Florida so this way we could have both. And I just want to SEE everything!

I want to be near my kids but DH wants to move somewhere where it's warm all year. I guess we could have a win win situation if our kids move to a place that's warm all year
Honestly though I'd stay here where we are and I wouldn't mind spending a few months in the south, then a few months out west and then some up north.. I'd kinda like to be flexible and able to see it all but still have a home base. DH and I are really trying to sock away $$ so we can retire and enjoy it. With the uncertainty of everything we are trying to set ourselves up for the best possible situation.. but who knows....

@Ajsmommy: I also agree about staying right where we are! We should have our mortgage paid off and I would love to get a little getaway house in the next county over. So, if my little bubble stays a bubble, then I will be okay and even happy to stay forever!

We are closing on our new build this week - on the lake. One day maybe we would downsize but only if we could find more lake front property. We’d live here most of the year and maybe some where tropical for part of the year. My mom does December and February in turks and Caicos and I could handle that!

We moved two hours away to the hot flatlands when my DH was offered a job a few years ago, but we’re moving back to DH’s hometown this winter. This is the view from his new office. I don’t foresee us moving from there—we will eventually inherit his parents’ house in the same town, so it would be hard to uproot ourselves.
But if I had to choose another place, I’d move to the Washington coast. We absolutely love the Forks area (even though we’re not big Twilight fans).
If I could choose somewhere overseas, it would be Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. I love the Alps. We are not tropical beach people, obviously!

@Hypatia: IDK anything about Twilight but holy cow that is a nice office view! It makes me pine for the mountains (I also prefer mountains to the ocean, but like a lake so am leaning toward the Adirondacks so we can be near family).
