We currently have a potty in DD's room, but she calls us when she needs to go. When we move in a couple weeks we'll take the potty out of her room, since the bathroom will be right across the hall from her room. She can still call us to take her to the bathroom, and we'll still come help her.

@Honeybee: I can't decide if I want her to go by herself or should I continue helping her for a while? Of course if she goes by herself, I don't have to wake up (and I am upstairs, she is downstairs) but I also worry about her getting hurt somehow or into mischief if she is on her own ....

@Andrea: Yeah mischief making was the decision-maker in our case. DD is perfectly capable of taking herself to the bathroom, but I don't trust her to take care of business and go straight back to bed in the middle of the night. I think she might get distracted along the way!

@Honeybee: good thinking, I guess I will keep doing the same!

DS uses the toilet, it's right across the hall. He does need our help though, or shall I say wants our help. Luckily, he doesn't usually wake at night to go to the toilet.
