I talked to a daycare dad today about getting together for a play date with our girls. My daughter has been asking to get together with his daughter and apparently his has been asking the same. We talked a little bit and it sounds like this Saturday is good for both of us. Where would you have the play date? I feel like the home is great for a first play date because you can talk to the parent(s) and the kids actually play together. Or is there somewhere better? Where do you have first-time play dates?

I'm planning to check a local events calendar for something free going on. Personally, I'm opting for not our home for a first play date till we know the parents better.

I don't mind doing them at home without knowing the parents, but I've noticed that kids sometimes have difficulty sharing their home toys, even though they're really good about sharing the school toys. So if possible, I'd suggest another location, like a playground or a children's museum.

@Mamaof2: @looch: I have a hard time with the park or museum because the kids run in so many different directions, they don't really "play" together and we don't get a chance to talk to the parents. Do you find this to be the case?

@mediagirl: museum wouldn't be a pick for me but the park is perfect - me and the mom can sit on the bench and watch the kids run around - we don't need to follow them.
I am ok with them not 100% sitting down and actively playing together - Like @looch: mentioned play dates at the house usually result in tears for my DD because they both want the same dress or their friend wont share a toy. -
@mediagirl: I think it depends, I mean, my son and his friends will often play on different equipment at a playground.
Is outside in your backyard an option, maybe a zoo? Or maybe buy a craft kit that's especially for the playdate?

We have a local play cafe that e wry one meets up at - good neutral territory and no one has to host. Do you have anything like that?

We met at a library. Ours has a great children's area with puzzles, legos, trains, and a fruit/veggie stand. We got there when it opened on a Saturday and had the run of the place. The moms and I got to sit and chat. When it's warmer, we'll meet at a park.

Indoor play cafe- kids can play and parents can chat. I agree with @looch about some kids not being the best at sharing.

I would prefer to have it either in my yard or at a park/play place. I'd really like to have it in my house but our house is small and we don't have a lot of space to entertain kids since all the big toys are in our smallish living room.

@sapphire: @Freckles: I wish! I don't think they're that popular here. That would be perfect.
@looch: I like the craft kit idea and our backyard is definitely an option - we don't have a swing set or anything but we have a play house. Our local playground is just SO BIG that it is difficult to have a play date there as the kids go in all different directions.

He chose the bounce house and said if the girls get bored, we can head back to our house. Thanks for the tips!
