I looked up the answer today, and was surprised by the results!
Which do you think has more traffic on Hellobee: the blog or the boards?

My guess would be the boards! (But, I'm biased because I'm more of a poster). I plan to do more blog reading as my pregnancy progresses. Right now I feel like I'm on info. overload though : )

I naturally go to the boards first but the blog does come up as a default when I type in HB.
I don't know the answer though. Maybe the blog because there are more lurkers? It's easier to read then to respond on blog or board posts.

I say boards. But I think the blog will surpass the boards once their are more bloggers up and running

The blog gets substantially more traffic than the boards!
The exception is if there are no blog posts, for example because Charlie is sick or if it's the weekend. Then the boards will sometimes surpass the blog in traffic.
But if the blog has a normal level of posting, then the blog can get up to 50% more traffic than the boards! More usually, the blog will get 30-35% more traffic than the boards...

@mrbee: Interesting. Are you able to tell us, how many 'hits' the blog and boards get? Is 'hits' even the right word? LOL
Is it in the thousands? or hundreds?

That is interesting. I guess there must be some readers of the blog who don't necessarily contribute (or become active in) the boards.

Hmm. No wonder your surprised. But it makes sense seeing #1 its the first page people see (the blog) and even if comments are not extremely high doesn't mean peope aren't reading.
In the end, it's a good sign

If the last two days of traffic held constant for the whole month, we'll probably do a little around a million pageviews in December? These things are hard to predict though, with the holidays and all.

Hhhmmm, I would have said the boards too. But it does make sense I guess. You see the blog first, and if you aren't a member, you are more likely just to read the blog and not the boards.

@Andrea: A smaller more intimate boards is a good thing!
In terms of posting, we can have 50-60 boards threads started on a busy day... things are starting to pick up! As long as Charlie doesn't get sick again, we'll probably be at 100-200 threads a day in no time.

@mrbee: No, not complaining! It wouldn't be as meaningful (for certain topics anyway) if you're constantly chatting with different people every day.

@mrbee: Haha. As I was typing 'hits', it sounded old. I did have a quick flashback to the old days and considering how quickly technology evolves I had a feeling hits was the wrong word.
Whoah! A million pageviews in one month. I wonder how many pageviews WB gets. I bet WB could do a million in a week or a couple days.

@bluestriped bee: I wish we had gotten there in a month! It will probably be closer to a few months, when you factor in the closed beta and what not.
We're mostly just focused on building a fun and helpful blog and community at this point... if that happens, we're hoping that the traffic will take care of itself!

I'm embarrassed to say I've never read the blogs. It is the default screen for me so I'm curious as if that counts as a hit? If so it may be that it is being 'hit' by every single member that signs in right? Or do you have a counter that counts when someone actually clicks onto the blog tab?

@ecogirl: Yup, that counts as a pageview.
Typically with a site like this, the blog will drive more traffic at first... then over time, the boards will catch fire and drive growth!
We're trying something a bit different this time, by investing a lot of time into the boards upfront.
Mrs. Bee and I have posted almost 600 threads to the boards... so the boards are a bit further along on the growth curve than usual!

This doesn't really surprise me. I think for a casual reader, the blog is an easy way to get information and read interesting content. The boards can seem more intimidating and like a commitment... It makes sense to me that people who come in later will take longer to get involved on the boards, as opposed to those of us who have been around since the beta days (like they were so long ago!)

I'm surprised at this as well! I do like that the "cozy" feeling of HelloBee boards (and even blog comments) hasn't changed since it went public...

I love the small community feeling the boards have right now. I feel like I know people's story and they know mine so we are invested in each other. I hope that feeling stays : )

@mrbee: Dude. A million page views right out the gate is awesome. I know ya'll are old hat at this thing, but seeing as you haven't done much promotion (from what I can tell) that is awesome. Congrats!
