I want my children to learn Japanese, Chinese and Spanish. It will be hard since we don't speak any of these languages at home.

Definitely Spanish. We speak Spanish at home so any LO will definitely know that (and English, obviously). I would like them to choose another in high school and stick with it, so I guess it just depends on what their school would offer. In my high school you could do Spanish, French, Mandarin, or American Sign Language.

Well they'll learn English and both dialects of Albanian easily from DH and I, but we plan on learning Croatian/Serbian and Arabic as a family starting next year when we move to Kosovo.
If they express an interest in any other language, I'll encourage it, but I don't have preferences for them aside from the ones above that we want to know as a family.

Definitely Cantonese since my family speaks that, Mandarin would be nice, but they'd have to go to school for that. And I think Spanish is good to know.

Spanish! Mostly because I've always wanted to be fluent (I can read it better than I speak it and can understand a decent amount) and DH speaks it (not a native speaker).

@AutumnLove: I'm curious--why Japanese?
I would love Spanish (I love the language myself). Mandarin and Arabic would probably open a lot of doors career wise.

English, of course, and Japanese, German, and since we're in Beijing right now, if she picked up a little mandarin, it would be good.

Hopefully, DS will pick up Cantonese and Khmer from me and the hubby, and eventually Mandarin. I think Spanish would be useful as well since we live in Texas. Plus, I loved learning Spanish in grade school!

I think Spanish would be useful. I'd still like to learn it myself.

Would like them to be fluent in Spanish, and I think studying a 3rd language in school would be helpful as well.

Since we're going to live in the US for the rest of our lives, I think she absolutely NEEDS to learn Spanish. I would love it if she would have an interest in other languages, as well but we'll start with Spanish. We want to learn it, as well.

@matador84: it's so hard to get them to speak with only one parent speaking , isn't it? That's why we selected a Spanish immersion preschool to augment my efforts.
I'd love my girls to learn a non-western language as well!

I feel like Spanish is a must with how many people speak it around here. I think Latin, depending on profession or field LO would go into would also be beneficial. If LO or any future children took up figure skating I would want them to lean Russian (could helps me understand coaches more lol).
@autumnlove: My DH Is half Japanese and I would love for LO to learn for that reason.

Definitely Korean, either French or Spanish (since most places we've traveled in the world we've been able to get by with French or Spanish). Some Latin would be good too since I found it helpful to have learned it. Fortunately the school we want to send a LO to teaches French, Spanish, and Latin!

Korean, French and Cantonese. Spanish would be a plus, but i think there are too many languages to learn already!

@mrsjacks it is! although, it is cute to hear dh try and mimic what i tell DS in spanish. i gotta give him credit for trying...! we have a lot of books that are english/spanish, so i will read it in spanish and then dh will read the same thing in english--it is kind of fun!

Just anything. Second language proficiency is such a valuable skill, and I'd like to start her young.

@matador84: We have a bunch of bilingual books and Lala always says, "No dada! Mama reads Spanish. You read English!" I think she gets that he's stumbling over himself to get the words out

I hope to teach our children French from a young age and I would like to encourage them to learn something else at some point as well but that would be up to them.
pomelo / 5820 posts
I know a little bit of conversational French, so I could help with that if LO wanted to learn!

Cantonese, it's important to me they can communicate with my mom. Mandarin will obviously be more useful later on in life but my mom doesn't speak Mandarin!

This makes me wish I knew another language! I think Spanish would be really beneficial for LO to learn but I also think sign language would be cool also. DH and I have said many times recently that we wish we knew sign language!

@creativemomma15: Sign language is so cool when you are far away from each other or the baby is sleeping and you don't want to make a peep. One of our good couple friends sign and it's really convenient. We can sign a few things to each other, but I wish we knew more!

Vietnamese and ASL. My grandma speaks Vietnamese. We don't live close to her, otherwise I would have her teach us!
pomelo / 5866 posts
Same as you- Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. Oh and Italian would be cool..since she was conceived in Italy.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
Spanish (DH is a Spanish teacher), French (I speak some very broken French but love it), Mandarin and Japanese (LO is part Taiwanese and Japanese).
