If you have experience with both, which do you prefer?
All purpose blanket (stripe) or the monkey mat. We have great weather and a park across the street, so I imagine using one of these on an almost daily basis.

We have the monkey mat (2nd one) and it's great. It folds up really small and it shakes out great. We use it a lot at the beach. The only complaint I have is that it's not very heavy, even with the weighted ends, so it can tend to move around a bit unless you put something on it.
I didn't like the form factor of the first one because it doesn't fold down very small so it's another big bulky thing to carry around.

The JJ Cole one (aka the stripes)! This post convinced me to get one:

I have the stripey one and love it!
We use it for picnics and movies in the park.

Monkey mat is so compact but not very comfy. Since you aren't going very far, the compactness may not be a huge benefit to you.

All purpose stripes! The monkey mat was too flimsy for me, and I returned it. I bought a similar one to the stripes at Costco, and it has held up well. I keep it in the trunk and have it on hand at all times.

Stripes-- we have the generic version from Target and have been using it for almost 10 years (pre-kids to now!). Picnics, something for baby to lie on for outdoor tummy time, beach days, pretend forts, etc. Perfect for our needs.
Since your park is close by, the bulkiness shouldn't be an issue. It would annoy me if I had to pack for a long walk/trip to the park, but if I was just going across the street, it wouldn't matter at all.

We have the stripes and we love it. However, I find it to be really heavy.

@LBee: I used my dad's stripe blanket and loved it, but then the blog mentioned the monkey mat. Just wanted to be sure!

I have a monkey mat and I love how compact it is because I'm in NYC and it's easy to throw in the stroller and go, but it is def flimsy and doesn't hold down well (we've never used the posts that you have to buy separately). If space isn't an issue, I'd go with a thicker option

I have the JJ cole one and I love it. It's thick and sturdy so I don't worry about putting my infant on it, whereas a thinner one may not protect the baby against rocks/sticks at a playground. I can't say enough good things about it. I've had it for almost 4 years and love it.
