I've always had this fantasy that when our baby is born and I know they're about to hand her to me, I will tell them, in a hot mess of tears, to "Let her Daddy hold her first." It makes me tear up to think of giving that to him, to be the first person she ever touched. I've never told him this, just planned on surprising him with it...
And then after about 10 seconds I'll make him fork her over- lol:)

I actually just asked my husband this the other night because I couldn't remember. He said I was the first one to hold her.

That is so sweet. I'm pretty sure DH held him first but I honestly don't remember. My mom and sister were also in the room but I think they stayed back. Everything is such a blur between the time he came out and when I finally got to hold him. I don't think it was that long but it felt like forever. I have a great picture of DH handing him to me though courtesy of my sister =)

They put both DDs on my belly so they could get them cleaned off quickly that part all happens really fast.
DH went with for the weighing, eye ointment, etc and carried her over to me.

I think mine were crossed on my chest. My husband touched him first because I was still out.

@regberadaisy: That's why I did it too. I kept asking to hold her and nurse her since it was taking a few minutes for the NICU nurse to look at her (because they saw meconium when my water broke). And it was wonderful. : )

@PrincessBaby: Not everyone but my anesthesia stopped working in the middle of the surgery and I started to move (and cuss!) a lot! I was strapped down but DH and a nurse still had to hold me down on one side and the anesthesiologist and another nurse took care of the other side!

They put him on my stomach almost right away but only for a second because I needed immediate attention. After they got him weighed and all they gave him to DH. My fave pictures from that day were of the nurse handing him over to DH and the first few seconds after (DH was crying and FIL is just watching and grinning in the background).

I would think if you have a vaginal birth it might be tough for dad to hold the baby before it's placed on mom's tummy since they need to cut the cord?

I was hoping for skin to skin & DH wanted to cut the cord, but the Dr cut the cord & sent him to the warmer right away. I was too emotional to care at the time. I told DH to go over to DS in the warmer. Later, DH told me that the cord was wrapped around DS's neck, so I guess that's why things happened so fast.
So, besides the nurse, DH was the first one to hold him.

Not due till March but I want it to be me. I had to be pregnant for 9 months, I think I will have earned it!

I think DH? He cut the cord, and it was too short for them to put DS on my chest right away so they had to cut it before I could hold him. Maybe I held him first? I can't remember, it was all such a blur! I do remember that I didn't get to try to nurse him- they took him back pretty quickly to weigh him. I remember sitting there very anxiously wanting my baby back!!

I did! After he was born they immediately put him on my chest for skin to skin but only for like a minute then DH held him for what seemed like ever while they stitched me up.

II did! Because I pulled her out. After 30 minutes of skin to skin I asked DH if he wanted to hold her but he said he didn't want to ruin our moment together and he was just enjoying watching us. Most amazing moment ever!

The doctor held her first since she was born via c-section. My arms were not strapped down; neither were anyone else's that I know who had a c-section. They passed her to my husband, who passed her to me and put her on my chest for skin-to-skin.

I am not there yet but I would like DH to. Yes I have had to ensdure the pregnancy but I do wish he could feel her and what not like I can. Plus with him having to Leave for Afghanistan for 1.5 yrs only 24 days after my due date...I really want to give him as much time with her as possible.

She went straight to me, we did skin on skin for over an hour. Dh was right there with us.

They put him right on my stomach. I'm pretty sure I reached out for him; it was like an instinctual reaction. Dh held him after he was cleaned up and swaddled

They both went on my belly for a minute right after being born, but very quickly. Our boy was first so the nurses put him in my arms and hubby held our girl. I actually don't think I held her for maybe 45 minutes?! I was getting stitched up and then we had to go back to the room with our families where the babes got passed around a bit.

The Doctor. My daughters umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck which caused it to TEAR off of her belly button. She needed immediate attention and stitches :-(. Then nurses and me for a few seconds before going to NICU.

The doctor, then the NICU staff. And once we were allowed to hold him down in the NICU, I was the first one and then DH.

@autumnlove: omg! Worst nightmare!
The OB put her on me while the nurse wipes her off, then after she was weighed and wrapped, DH brought her back to me. I held her for a few, let him hold her, then I got her back. My parents came up and held her, then I did skin to skin while the nurse finished putting everything in the computer. I also held her while we were wheeled upstairs (DH had all the bags!) and he fell right asleep while I obsessed and held her all night. Lol.

I did - it was never even a question! The hospital is very pro skin to skin time so as soon as she was born, she went right on my chest for DH to cut the umbilical cord, and then they wrapped a blanket over us both, DD started nursing (sort of) and that is how we stayed for the next hour and a bit. DH was snuggled right in there with us and it was perfect!

I did, my hospital does an hour of skin- to-skin with mommy before the nurses really do anything. Husband held her after the skin-to-skin and hasn't put her down much since. It's so cute!

Me. did some skin to skin until I had to get stitched up about 5 mins later. Then DH took him for half an hour

They put him on my stomach for a minute right after but then DH did the actual first holding. He held him first after they gave him back after weighing, etc too.

@MamaMoose: baby is healthy and doing well so far! She was 5lbs2oz, 18.5 inches at birth and was down to just 4lbs 11oz when we brought her home yesterday. She is so tiny, we're just in awe!
