When we used to live near our parents, they used to watch our dog. We now have a dog sitter who watches him at her apartment. We've been lucky that we've never had to board him at a kennel. He loves going to the sitter - it's vacation for him too when we go away. He gets all the attention and kids free.

It depends where we're going. If my parents aren't with us, they will watch him. My pup and mom are BFF's, and I know that where he'd prefer to be (even more than being at our house!). If my parents are away too, my in laws will take him if it's just for a weekend. It's hard with our pup because you can't leave him home alone or he'll tear up your house. He ate my inlaws blinds so they don't love having him anymore.
But we're going to NY for 10 days and since they can't leave him alone and my parents will be going too, we'll probably have to board him

It used to be my ILs or BIL. My ILs moved away and my BIL passed away.
So now deciding whether to go overnight or a weekend trip we usually nix it because we don't want to put our dog in kennel unnecessarily.When we have to we put her at a kennel it's at the vet's office. It gives us piece of mind that there's always a vet there in case anything happens. They also have a fenced in area for them to run around all the day.

My FIL will watch our dog..but our dogs don't get along!

@artbee: have a wonderful time in NY! Both our families are there but I haven't been back since thanksgiving. Traveling with two LOs is tough!

My mom or brother both live close by so they do it :). So far we haven't had to kennel them but also would probably do that at our vet.

We take our dogs to a kennel. They love going there. It's like they get a vacation too.

We usually take them for boarding at their doggie daycare. That way they get daycare during the day and have their own space for night. Since they go to daycare once a week already it is a familiar and comforting place for them.

@BoogieBea: thanks! We're not going for a.few months. Hubby and I also have family there, we're actually going for my sister's wedding. It'll be lo's first flight, we're so nervous!

we have a petsitter who comes in twice a day to care for our cat when we go away. She also takes in the mail, cleans litterbox, waters plants, etc. She's really awesome - luckily our cat likes her (the cat really doesn't like anyone but my husband and I!).

I used to leave my dog with my sister when I was single. When I got married and moved away, my sister adopted my dog. He's happier and less lonely with my family.

My in-laws take him, and they love it! We've offered to board him and they get upset, haha.

ILs!! Fil is retired n they have a huge fenced in yard. They lost their dog a few years back and love our fur babies as their own

We don't really have any family nearby so our dog gets boarded. I found a cheaper in-home boarder, so I don't feel as bad leaving her at one.

when we lived in va and ky, we boarded her.... i was fine with it. i think she liked it there because everyone we ever were in contact with always tells me how much they absolutely loved her. right now, she's staying with my parents while i'm pregnant. if my parents go away, my bro and i have access to their house.

Depending on how busy my parents are and how long we will be gone they go with them. If it's a weekend thing or just a few days my brother in law and his wife (who live around the corner) stop by several times a day and play and let our dogs out.

when we used to live near dh's parents in dc, they would take our dog. but now that we're in nyc, we either have friends stay with him if it's a short trip (1-2 nights), or we go to dc first, leave the dog there, and then go on our trip. it's actually getting ridiculous--it makes every vacation like 2 days shorter since we need to take the time to drive down and back, plus spend a little time with the in-laws so they don't feel totally used. it's only happened with i think 2 or 3 trips, but it's bad! dh is such a baby about our dog though, he's 4 and never been boarded....but after our next trip in july it's really time to give this up and just board him...
